I know we need an ethernet cable to connect in dorms, but are we allowed to bring a router and plug the cable into that so we can get wireless in our rooms?

Yep! We had several people do that, and everyone loves you for it if you share :)

Absolutety

How long should my ethernet cable be?

in ME the plug was right next to the desk so i didn’t have a very long cable

I’m reading this move in guide and it says that we have to install some software to access the internet. ***? What exactly is ResNet?

resnet is like the server, i guess. (i feel lame for not knowing 100%) but basically you install this thing called cisco clean access (i believe you can only install it once on campus), and you log in w/your uci id/password every monday because it resets. it checks to make sure you have some kind of antivirus installed, etc.

I bought a 6 ft ethernet cable. I think it should suffice… or hopefully someone brings a router!!

I think it’d be a better idea to not share with too many people. Not because sharing is necessarily bad or anything, but a lot of times people have problems connecting wirelessly from my experience, and they’re all going to go to you if they have a problem. I guess it’s not a problem if you’re not bothered by people going to you for troubleshooting all the time, but just my two cents on it.

Nah, I disagree. From what I’ve seen anyway, I had two friends who had wireless routers on the second and third floor. If their wireless didn’t work, people would just complain and then get over it by using someone else’s wireless or go get their ethernet cable. Plus, if you don’t tell people what your wireless name is, people have no idea whose it is (sometimes they’d change the wireless name into something silly for laughs).

About the ethernet cable, it probably doesn’t need to be too long, but it depends on how big your room is and where your desk is. I brought like a 30 foot cable (haha!) so I could use my laptop on my bed since I had a triple and it was pretty far (but I stopped after one of my suitemates brought a wireless router ).

in AV the ethernet port was on the opposite side of the room as my computer. So instead of running a cable on the floor which is ugly and dangerous, i bought a 50 ft ethernet cable to loop around the room on the floor.

hey guys,
i was wondering if anyone could post a link of what an ethernet cable looks like.
i dont want to buy something that is not an ethernet cable.
sorry if this sounds stupid…

Basically just ask for a CAT-5 ethernet cable. The length is up to you.

if you’re in mesaaa and in the technology hall, you get wireless :D
