It's a small question but can anyone living in the dorms tell me what the Internet speed is in Chapel Hill? (In terms of Mbps or Mb/s)

It was always something I was kind of curious about... heh.

Haha, I’m curious about dorms internet speeds as well. I ran speedtest on Davis Library’s access points while I was at ctops and got 9.2 Mbps up and down. 25ms ping.

I’m not in a dorm right now, so I don’t know the current speed.

On August 19, when I moved in, I had 41.12 Mbps download, 8.18 Mbps upload, 34 ms ping. Towards the end of the year, my speed alternated between 1-3 Mbps, even in my dorm.

This changes heavily based on whether you’re using Wifi or Ethernet, and how many people are in the same location as you. During exams, for example, I could barely get 25 Kbps using Wifi in the undergrad library. My webpages wouldn’t open. But when I used my ethernet thing, I got several Mbps.

I think I have a screenshot somewhere of a 70-90 Mbps speed test in February; I’ll search for it later.

Thanks guys but ugh… I’m paying around $30 a month for these speeds atm. Anything less would feel slightly… painful ><

Unless you download a LOT, you really don’t need those speeds. Loading webpages with 90 Mbps is overkill, and UNC doesn’t allow you to download illegally. Online games run perfectly fine with what UNC has, webpages load immediately (or close to immediately), HD videos stream perfectly fine, and you’re not allowed to host your own server (UNC blocks ports).
If you want really fast speeds (Gtech is 10-40 times faster than UNC), and this is a defining factor, consider other colleges. Here’s UCLA: <a href=“Speedtest by Ookla - The Global Broadband Speed Test”>Speedtest by Ookla - The Global Broadband Speed Test;

I’m in Davis right now working with some data on a remote server, watching espn, and chatting it up on cc (all on my laptop). I have about a 21 mbps connection speed.

No way I’m choosing another college over UNC because of Internet speeds -.-…

But just asking to see what life will be like there since my orientation is pretty much right before I move in.

Regarding torrents (illegal or legal [and yes there are such thing as legal torrents]) does UNC block them outright?

No, UNC doesn’t block torrents, but they do act on RIAA notices, and they keep track of network activity.
