Internship during the summer before freshmen year

What type of internships should a graduating HS senior be gunning for? I am majoring in business/finance, but obviously most internships at any financial firms are going to be reserved for college kids.

Do you know of any programs geared towards HS seniors or should I just try to get whatever internship I can get, even if it is like a billing department gig at a random company?

see if you can do an unpaid position at a well known firm or something
that way you can shadow the professionals or at least get a feel of how its like to be in that sort of career (try to get paid if you can, that'd be even better)
this will not only help you figure out what you like/don't like, but will also be a great resume booster for when you apply to internships as a freshman or sophomore

prob shouldn't be too tough for you to land a PWM gig locally...thats what i did, and it has set me up pretty well as a college freshman looking for internships in more advanced industries. if your parents know any financial advisors personally or are clients, they can prob hook you up with a summer thing. pm me if you have any questions.

Before I applied, I got an internship with

1) Grameen Bank
2) U.S. Representative's Office
3) Proctor and Gamble (through a connection)

Okay, how did you get those?

or u could just work at a golf course and hang out w/ friends every night... seriously enjoy your summer.

Well, grameen bank will accept pretty much anyone with good stats. Since its in a third world country, not that many people apply there (i had family there).

The U.S. Representative's internship was basically because i personally knew the person and he liked me very much.

And the Proctor and Gamble internship was through a connection (family friends were pretty high up in management).

Enjoy your summer. No need to work then. You'll have three summers before graduation to prove yourself.

when you apply for these summer internships, would you mention the university at which you intend to study?

if you think it'll impress them, or if they have alums working there who can help you out, then definitely.

but yeah, i agree with undefined. take your summer between hs and college easy. if you must do an internship, maybe find something thats just a couple of days a week...something light so you can still have fun.

i think the attitude towards works of these nature really depends on the character/ambition of the individual

if you really want a headstart and you are quite certain regarding your future career i'd say that applying for a summer internship is crucial for future success; with this experience under your belt, it would give you somewhat of an edge whilst applying for internships at university, and consequently job after graduation...it's really a domino effect IMO

I tend to agree with you Leprechaun, but sjay and undefined also have a point. I think it's all about the balance.
