I will be graduating high school this May. I plan to study finance/accounting in college (most likely at Univ. of Illinois Urbana-Champaign). I really want to find a summer job/internship that will help me in my future. What kind of jobs could I apply for that would look really good on my resume and give me work experience that would impress future employers? To put it simply, I want a job this summer that would give me a better chance of obtaining prestigious internships while I am an undergrad. I have already applied to all of the local banks. What other businesses should I apply to? I appreciate any help. Thanks!

Weird I was thinking the same exact thing. Thanks for the post

Applying to the local banks was a great idea. As far as other places to apply, I would consider schools and small family-owned businesses. Another place to apply might be summer camp programs - they often need help with accounting and finances for a shrot time. Any job will be good for you though. If you start working now before entering college, you should be in a good position to get internships later. Start networking now and it will pay off. Good luck finding an internship!

I know this isn’t going to be what you want to hear, but doing any sort of internship in high school will not help you get an internship later on.

Doing something unique will.
If you have the money, backpacking through Europe or climbing K2 would give you some pretty amazing stories. Something that takes preparation and determination (finishing an iron-man for example) would also be awesome.

This may sound counter-intuitive but think about it this way. Say you want to work at a large investment bank:
Which person would you rather meet?

Climbed K2 before going to college
PWM after freshman year
Boutique bank after sophomore year

PWM in high school
PWM after freshman year
boutique bank after sophomore year

Also, if you’re looking for a “prestigious internship” (whatever that means), you’re going to have a tough time coming out of UICU. Being open minded about transferring might not be a bad idea.

angryelf,

UIUC is a highly rated accounting program.
