Since this summer seems to be wasted for me doing minimum wage jobs and reading financial books, I was wondering how early should I start applying to get a good internship as a freshmen (preferably next summer). I'll want to go into finance and ibanking but I'm not completely sure what types of internships I should be looking at and what would benefit me the most in terms of recognition or help in the future. If anyone with any experience can guide me I appreciate it.

ok well as a freshman the only way to land a ibanking internship is to be very well connected...so unless you know a top exec a an ibank you can rule out ibanking for after freshman year summer. For that summer I would recommend trying to get a good internship in the finance or strategy department at a good firm...for this you can apply directly or use one of your parent's contacts. For my freshman summer, for example, I worked in the strategy department of a large semiconductor company which gave me the chance to learn a lot and work directly with c-level execs on a daily basis (looks really good if you want to do banking or consulting). Sophomore summer you can start to apply to sophomore-specific banking programs but these are extremely tough to get into so don't count on getting them (i know people with 4.0s,etc here at wharton who didn't get one). Again sophomore summer try to land a good finance job through connections, on-campus recruiting, etc. Then jr year summer you can try for a ibanking job as the majority available are for rising seniors...if you don't get a banking job don't get too depressed as full time offers later in the fall are much more readily available than internship opportunities. I'd also suggest looking at smaller boutique banks/regional banks, as they are less sought after than the bulge bracket firms.

^do you have any advice on what looks good for a freshman applicant's resume. Like in first year should I concentrate mainly on grades or leadership stuff? And lets say you want a third year internship in Ibanking..will work experience in a a non corporate environment such as working as a waiter be any help. It does teach you to to deal with people so I don't see why not. lastly, what about commercial banking internships...any help in landing an Ibanking job?

here is an example of a decent freshman resume (focused on academics and leadership, also includes some typical h.s. jobs.

depending on what kinds of things you do during a commercial banking internship...it could help. For example if you work at Wells Fargo as a credit analyst summer intern (great program) performing due diligence, etc. it looks very good for an ibanking job.

Thanks dude, you're a big swinging dick.

More than likely I'll becoming back to Dallas next summer after I finish freshmen year at UT, and as luck will have it there is a Wells Fargo near me. How long should I wait before sending my resume there or even directly applying for an intership?

how did you go about actually getting that first interview? on the websites itt says you can submit your resume online but I highly doubt you can actually get a job like this. Did you call em up or know someone inside?

Is this after your freshman year or before???
