I just wanted to hear the experiences people had or heard first person as to how prevalent internship and job opportunities are at Rochester, or after graduating from U of R. How are the career fairs at the school? Because due to the fact that it is not in your typical big metropolitan area, such as Boston or NYC, I can only imagine the difficulties students face getting internships (specifically for those with a major in economics or business). While strategic locations are important, schools in other “secluded” areas do provide excellent career services for their students (Cornell and its job fairs come to mind) and I was wondering if U of R was the same. And this is in regards to students who plan to pursue a career in business, as I realize opportunities arise quite occasionally for other majors that have internships with the university’s medical center, and whatnot)
U of R student here. The school’s career center is very good at writing resumes, cover letters, and other materials. However, the career fairs are not very good. It’ll really come down to your effectiveness at networking.
My sense is like triplenick says, the career center does a really good job with resumes and does try but the internships my son found were from he and I looking through the ads and networking. He did not find the career fairs helpful.
What UR is good at is opportunities at undergrad research, which if that is your interest can take the place of internship experience if that it your interest. It was not my son’s though he really enjoyed going to school at UR.
For both of my d’s, one of which is a Rochester grad, found summer internships through their department and their faculty networks.
