My son is planning on going to law school after his undergraduate studies. He would love to do an internship on Capital Hill during one of his summer breaks. I tried looking at the UNC website and internships appears to be something a student needs to find on their own. Didn't know how difficult this would be since the school is in NC, his home is in NJ, and the internship is in DC. Does anyone know a student that has had a successful internship?

For internships on Capitol Hill, you should first start with your local congressman. From there, look up the causes that he may be interested in and see if there a chapter in DC. Also, there are an abundance of law firms and companies that have internships programs in the area. A company I previously worked for had several interns during the year in everything from sales, marketing, legal, operations, etc. Should be easy to find with an internet search. For instance check out IBM, Cisco, Lenovo and others with major complexes in RTP, they always have internships posted on-line.

Regarding UNC, I would start with the advisor he gets for his major and go from there. My S is also interested in Poli Sci and has asked about internships and it seems that he was content with the programs they could offer. I do not know the details, but perhaps we he wakes up I can get some info from him.

A few of my first year friends this fall interned for John Edwards. In terms of getting internships, we have the office of student career services that I've yet to pay a visit to, but I know my brother was able to get an internship in film making through them. I haven't had any first hand experiences with internships yet, but I have the impression that they're really not hard to come by in whatever field you're interested in because of our career services. Sorry I can't be more help.

This isn't the summer, but UNC-Chapel Hill has an incredible semester in Washington program focused on Public Policy: Program Brochure

Wow, this is exactly what my son wants to do. Thanks!
