I am a 17 year old high school student looking for an internship. What companies or organization offer these internships all year round to kids my age in connecticut?
You should start with your high school to see if they partner with businesses and organizations to offer internships.
Through our high school program, my older son did a summer internship (unpaid) with our local city’s engineering dept. The internship was paired with a class at the local CC. The class met once a week, and covered things like how to write a resume, conduct yourself in an interview, etc.
Although he’s mostly interested in mechanical, the opportunity to work with the civil engineers was too great to pass up. He and a few other HS students were given various projects, and after the summer period passed, he asked if he could stay on (still unpaid).
Fast forward to November, and the dept offered to make it a paid internship to my son and his friend. In fact, my son told me yesterday that the dept is looking for a way to make the pay retroactive (not sure to what date). This makes me happy and proud, because it tells me that they value his work a lot.
I don’t know what field is your interest, but reach out everywhere. If you can convey that you’re sincere and interested, and will work hard, you should find something that will match. At the high school level, you probably should focus on nonprofits and small businesses (i.e. if you’re interested in accounting, maybe contact a local CPA or tax advisor).
