I am currently a sophomore, but I am looking for prestigious summer internships. I understand that internships are mainly in college, but I have heard about high school internships. Could someone give me more information?
Some high schools have programs that help you get matched with a internship at a local business. If yours doesn’t, try searching online for internships in subject you’re interested in–there are many summer opportunities available to high schoolers. Also, don’t worry if you don’t get one this year–many people only do internships their junior or senior years of high school.
@aykt4245 I have tried looking them up, but all that comes up is either college internships or stuff that you pay to do (not an internship).
Have you tried talking to your high school counselor? They might have more information about more local internships…Also sometimes your teachers can be a good resource–most likely you’re not the only one from your school that has ever wanted to get an internship so teachers may have heard of other students interning somewhere. Don’t be afraid to ask around…other students may also be in the same boat as you, or maybe talk to some upperclassmen and see if any of them have interned anywhere.
This depends a lot on what you want to do – are we talking about a business internship, a lab internship, what? Depending on the field and what’s available in your town, you may be able to make some connections on your own. For example, I live in a university town, and I know of kids who have contacted professors in their area of interest to ask if they might be able to work out something for the summer in their labs. Stuff like that. If you’re looking for something more "business"y, you might contact a local company and ask them with whom you would speak to discuss potential opportunities. I think going to your guidance counselor is a great idea, too, but don’t discount the power of being proactive and motivated to impress someone into giving you a chance.
Definitely agree with the above poster! Just email - or call or talk in person if you can - people who work in places you’d be interested in learning more about and/or interning there. I didn’t even know about high school internships till late last year (I’m a senior right now), but through a bunch of emails to various people, I ended up interning at my local newspaper and it was an invaluable and unforgettable experience!
You can always send a short (aka don’t go over one page) resume to whomever you email in order to increase your credibility and such
