I want to go to engineering school at the University of Michigan but for today's standards my GPA (3.75) and ACT (27 but retaking soon) do not meet up with U of M's latest averages. BUT this past summer (summer of my junior year) I landed myself a design engineering internship that lead to a paid position where I was eventually working on actual product designs for real customers. Does anyone know for a fact or have any opinions on weather or not they think this will have any positive leverage in my acceptance? If so, how would you recommend supplying this information in my applications?

Congrats on getting that internship, but the fact that you seem to worry whether it will affect your college acceptance worries me. Do something because you love it. But seeing that you want to go to engineering school, I don’t think that’s a big problem.

However, the internship can truly make you stand out, shows college that you have taken the next level. When you apply, you should be able to supply this info in your college activities (Common App). Also, you may choose to incorporate into your essays when applying to UMich.

The fact is, college will take all parts of your application into consideration. My suggestion is to try to increase your test scores and get high grades senior year. Best of luck!

It can most certainly make you unique, but make sure you aren’t doing this just for college acceptances. Your best bet is to do this, and to increase your scores and GPA, and emeraldtree said

Thank you both for your input! I now realize that it sounded like I only did the internship to help with college but that was not the case. Actually, I got the internship and then realized that I wanted to go into engineering and it was my true passion. But anyways, thank you both!
