Interservice Commsion

How exactly does the process for recieving an interservice commision upon graduation work? Is it looked down upon or discouraged, or viewed as a great idea for officers to promote their academy to all branches of the military? Can anyone simply request to be commisoned into another branch? Is it a very simple process or difficult and rare? I ask mostly because of curiosity, and would appreciate any professional response.

From those I've talked to, it's a preety difficult thing to get approved.

It is very difficult to get an interservice commission, but they do occur. Maybe a total of five or so per year, with more to USAF than USA. Among the things considered at USNA for those wanting an Army or AF commission are: whether you applied to the other academy (and were not accepted); significant family history in other service; job in Army or AF that you want to do and that is not available in USN or USMC; and reasons for wanting the "transfer" (obviously somewhat related to the other criteria).

You should not attend one academy hoping to be commissioned in a different service. If you attend an academy, expect to be commissioned in that service -- or services in the case of USNA. If you want to keep your options open, you're better off attending civilian school and then attending the OCS of your choice upon graduation.

Sorry guys. Couldn't help myself.
