How long does it take to be contacted for an interview after submitting your application on Common App?

My friend got an interview for MIT before he submitted his MIT app. Is that the same with Harvard or do they only let you get an interview AFTER you submit the app?

Also, how long does it take to get the Applicant Status Portal code thingy?

1) it depends. Maybe never. Not everyone gets interviewed. Mostly it’s just coincidence b/c applicants > interviewers
2) Only after app is deemed complete by H office for alumni interviews. Did your friend go to on-campus interview at MIT? That would explain it
3) dunno.

MIT actually encourages that you create a MyMIT account even if you are not sure you are going to apply. After that, if you are going to apply, they require that you schedule your interview yourself before Oct. 20th for EA or Dec 10th for RD. So, it’s possible to have an interview before you actually submit an application. Incidentally, they place a lot more emphasis on the interview than most of the very top schools. Last year, only 1% of applicants who chose not to interview were admitted versus 10.8% of those who did interview or were waived from doing it.
