Interview

I've just been contacted by a Dartmouth alumni interviewer for an interview this coming Friday. I've never been to an interview before. What should I expect? Should I go? How should I dress? OMG I'm so nervous! I think I'm going to have seizures over this. The place of of interview is that far away (like a 20 minutes drive at most), but I'm scared I might lower my chances if I mess up. I'm not really a good talker myself ...

Yea - go to the interview. Wear something that would make your grandma proud. Just relax and be yourself. Think up a couple of questions about Dartmouth in case the interviewer asks you if you have any questions about Dartmouth. What is your greatest strength? What is a area in which you would like to improve?

Hey! I just had my interview today, and I was REALLY nervous at first. But it was actually really relaxing and informal. Just a simple conversation. First she told me about herself, her experiences in Dartmouth, etc. Then she asked me some questions. Tell me about yourself, why you chose Dartmouth, what you want to do in college. As long as you keep the conversation nice and smooth, it’ll be a nice experience. But I guess that also depends on your interviewer. I heard some interviewers just bombarded people with questions, but mine felt a lot more easier. Also, I think it’s good if you can lighten up the mood with some humor (I made the interviewer laugh! Hooray!). Overall, I think the interview is so you can get to know Dartmouth better, and vice versa. I don’t think it will hurt you chances, and it probably won’t really help you that much either.

Also, my interview was very casual. Both of us were dressed really casually, and she even bought me coffee. Good luck! (:

I just had my Dartmouth alumni interview. They vary greatly depending on the experience and interviewing abilities of the interviewer, I think. Although my interview went well, my assigned alum showed up with 2 pages of typed questions to ask me, and he asked ALL of them to me. It took 1.5 hrs to get thru them all as he jotted down notes on my replies. There were some of the normal questions you’d expect, like why do you like Dartmouth, etc, but alot of them were like job interview questions: “do u consider yourself an apple or a banana?” “If u could bring back to life one dead person, who would that be and why?” “What have you failed at?” Plus, we met at a coffee shop where all of the tables were close by each other and everyone at the tables on each side of ours just sat there and listened in on the entire interview. I’m not making this up, as at one point, the guy at the next table interjected “I’m glad I’m not applying to college these days.” It was all pretty uncomfortable and exhausting, altho I don’t feel as if the interviewer had a clue that it felt like that to me or that the interview felt more like an inquisition, instead of an “informal discussion.” He seemed like a nice person, just not a great interviewer. My experiences with other college interviews were alot more relaxed, conversational, and fun.
