Interview

I have an admissions interview coming up and I'm not completely sure how I need to dress. I know Wake is a fairly conservative school and kind-of preppy so do I need to dress more formal? Would a seersucker jacket with a bow tie be acceptable or would it really stand out?

I think it’d be a little ridiculous looking. I’d just wear a nice shirt, khakis and tie. Jacket if you’d like

I’d definitely go seersucker and bowtie – make them remember you. If you’re going to wear a tie/beau be sure to wear a blazer with it.

I normally wear seersucker when I dress up. I personally don’t even own a navy blazer; I only have my seersucker one and a camelhair one. I just don’t want to look out of place for my interview.

You answered your question–be yourself and if that is you, wear it.

As an admissions officer, I always really appreciate when students dress up a bit (and send thank yous afterwards)–it is much more respectful.

I agree. It’ll be obvious that you dressed up for your interview, but that’s not a bad thing at all.

When S interviewed, we saw people with everything from jeans to suits at the admission office. The jeans and suits really stood out as the exception. S was admitted and wore a pair of khakis, button-down dress shirt. Mostly, applicants wore something like they would to church. Seersucker suit and bow tie would be way over the top…but if that is your personality…go for it.

For college interviews I wore business causal attire (I am female so I wore a nice shirt and black pants with low heels). I thought that full on suits were going a bit overboard but dressing too casually is probably worse. I agree that a seersucker suit and a bow tie might be a bit over the top - if you don’t end up wearing them there is a lot of room for that attire at our football games anyway!

Then again I wore a nice shirt and pajama shoes/slippers during my Wake interview because I did it over Skype. :-)
