Hey guys! I'm thinking of applying to Rice early decision. Is it better to have an interview on campus or off?
I have heard that an on campus interview is more beneficial. Is that true? I don't know if I can travel to Houston for an interview. I live four hours from Houston and it will be difficult to travel there.

My son liked interviewing on-campus because he could stay on campus after it and sit in on a class, and then eat lunch with students (and Dad got to go to see the Menil Gallery and enjoy Houston for a few hours while he was enjoying Rice!). Worked out nicely to have the interview on campus (but it was a tiring day due to the drive)

Yeah it would be convenient if you did it and also did a tour, lunch with a student (biased because I lunch host), etc. So if you might potentially plan on doing that stuff, it would also be a good day to interview.

I wouldn’t worry about its effects on your admissions chances. I did an off-campus alumni interview and it was a great experience. We just met at a coffee shop and talked for an hour or so and my interviewer was very friendly and happy to tell me about Rice.

My son visited campus, but did not do an interview. He was admitted in regular decision and will be attending this fall.

A campus interview is helpful because I think it will help you better answer some of the supplemental questions.

I don’t think it really matters - pick whichever one works best for you. Campus has the benefit of seeing Rice and getting a better perspective but the interview should be the same and won’t benefit you any more.

I didn’t do an interview and still got in.

@parenting3 In the second paragraph, meant to say “a campus VISIT (not interview)…”
