Interview

What are some typical questions asked by interviewers during an on-campus interview? Are the questions really "uncommon" like the essay prompts for admission? How long do the interviews usually last. This is my first college interview, so I'm kind of nervous.

It depends on the interviewer. There shouldn't be any very strange questions like the essay prompts, but there are some interviewers who often ask questions that require some thinking. Some interviewers will try to engage you in an intellectual conversation on some topic--probably one related to something you've talked about. Other interviews, I've heard, are quite ordinary. Overall, just relax, be yourself, and be ready to talk a lot. I was never asked this, but you should be ready to verbalize an answer to why you want to go to the U of C specifically (hint: talk about the core and intellectual atmosphere as opposed to the city location).

I believe on campus interviews generally last about 45 minutes.

Best thing you can do is relax. You know everything you need to know.

My interviewer (who is now an admissions officer, but wasn't at the time I was there) asked me what classes I was taking and asked me to talk about each. Somehow we got into some crazy conversation from there.

I would also suggest that you arrive early and read whatever literature on the school is there. That way, if there's a stall in conversation, you can say, "Oh, I was reading this booklet, and I had a question about...."

I also forget where I read this, but I believe the dean of admissions says that interviews are tossed out if they work against the applicant.

Ah, I'm having an interview tomorrow morning! I'll tell you about it later if you want. It's my third, but that doesn't mean anything. I thought my Rice interview (first) went better than my WashU interview (which was only like 20 minutes long haha). Well, good luck to you on the interview!

It was really interesting! I think it's the funnest interview I've had so far. I didn't even think it was an interview at the end. Yes, the guy asked some unexpected questions, and he even stumped me a couple times, but I thought it went really smoothly. I just thank quiz bowl because without that broad knowledge base, I'd have been out in the cold on questions dealing with paintings, classics, etc. The interview just allows you to be you, so you'll be fine if you're not trying to be some "perfect applicant" or trying too much to impress.

Yikesaroo! I'm no quiz-bowl genius!

The questions are very open-ended, so you don't need to know about Rafael or Monet to answer the question about what pictures you'd hang on a wall.
