Hey, I have an interview with Duke alum Daniel Wagner this Sunday evening. Any suggestions/tips? What should I wear?

All the usually suggestions generally apply like be yourself, be ready to talk about yourself, prepare a few questions for the alum regarding Duke, show genuine interest, etc.

As for dress code, I think I've seen most people on this board suggest business casual so slacks, loafers, and a button down shirt for guys and a nice skirt/pants, blouse, and a pair of heels or other nice shoes for girls. It's also somewhat dependent on the interviewer as I've heard of people whose interviewer suggested wearing jeans/sweatshirt and meet for a cup of coffee at the local starbucks. But absent that, business casual is always a good call.

I agree ^. I had my interview a few days ago and the most important thing, as cliche as it is, is to truly be yourself. If you show a passion for what you want to do and possibly describe why duke is a fit, then you should be fine. these interviews don't count for much apparently, but it only helps to make a good impression. by showing that you are knowledgable about the school and really interested in pursuing something you can get from duke (and no where else), then your interview recommendation might go from "good" to "excellent"

i tried to do that myself and we talked for an hour straight about so many different things. it was a great experience! PS - make sure to ask questions!

Okay, thanks! I' meeting at the local Caribou (coffee shop), but he didn't really tell me what to wear......I'm a girl, so should I just assume business casual? He's kind of formal with his e-mails, so I don't think he'd want me to show up in jeans and a sweatshirt, lol.

Hey, could someone help me out too? If I'm meeting my interviewer at a Barnes & Noble, would the same idea apply? Like, should I dress nice or just more casual?

^ mine is at Borders & my interviewer told me to wear jeans

my interviewer didn't request any particular clothing, so i wore a nice shirt/tie and dress pants. personally, unless he/she says otherwise, i would wear business casual clothes. it cant hurt to groom up and look good.

Wish me luck people, my interview is at 8:15 tonight!

Good luck to everyone with upcoming interviews as well!

The interview was AWESOME! If anyone has questions, please let me know.

I’m not sure if anyone will still answer this question because it’s so late, but do you perhaps remember what kind of questions were in the interview? And did you get into Duke or decide to go there?

I have my interview tomorrow in a Panera Bread. He said that it was going to be “casual” but I’m not sure what I should wear. If anyone could help I’d really appreciate it!

I think jeans, flats, a caridgan, a dressy blouse would look nice, i actually wore skinny jeans, flats, and a black shirt with a scarf (starbucks) I think it lasted an hour had it a while back but dont know if I should still send out my app!

I had my interview today at Starbucks. It is very informal, and you shouldn’t worry about attire. I wore jeans and a white polo, and I would say I was much more dressed-up than my interviewer.

Some questions he asked me:
~How is school going?
~What classes are you taking?
~What are your favorite subjects and why?
~Do you participate in any extracurriculars relevant to your favorite subjects?
~How did you first become interested in Duke?
~What is something about yourself you’d like the admissions people to know that wasn’t already listed on your application?

The rest of his inquiries were tangential questions that fell under the categories listed above.

I’m also Hispanic, which he asked about. I was surprised that Duke disclosed this information to him, and that they were at all curious to find out more about it. I just told him the truth: I’m semi-fluent in Spanish, though predominantly American, with familial ties in Honduras and Guatemala.

thank you! that helps. i’m leaving in an hour for mine :] i’ll post again after

I’m getting nervous that I haven’t heard from an alumni about setting up a local interview yet. Do you know if every applicant gets an interview. I live in Philly area so not a small out of the way place. What have you heard about the % of applicants who receive interviews and should I contact Admissions to request one?

i had my interview last week, it was pretty casual i wore jeans, boots, and a nice shirt. he asked me:
-favorite subject and why?
-what’s something that happened at school recently that raised a lot of discussion?
-who’s one person (celebrity or historical) who i admire and why?
-if i had one day to do anything i wanted what would it be?
-if i could change one thing in the world what would it be?

he didn’t ask me a single question about duke. but i think it went pretty well, it only lasted about a half hour.

^ me too. Apparently they have until late Feb to do the interview. My interviewer made it very clear that this was very casual. I wore a dress shirt, designer jeans, converses, and a hollister hoodie. I did not tuck my shirt in, and this was fine. Go with a couple of questions that you really can’t get answers to from the website. Questions like what was your favorite experience? Are good, but questions like what SAT score should I have? Or what are my chances? Are bad… very bad. Be prepared for questions like why do you want to go to duke? What do you like to do for fun? and what do you want to do with your future?/what do you want to study at duke? Overall be confident, but not overconfident and remember it is a two sided conversation. Good luck, I’m sure you’ll do fine. Remember the interviewers are generally very nice people who generously donate their time to duke/us. Don’t be late.
