Interviews, any one else got one?

I’ve just been contacted by a brown alum in my area for an interview. Not sure how to prepare but I’m pretty surprised.

Yeah, mine's next Tuesday. I was surprised to hear from the alum so early on because I turned my application in on January 1st, but I'm assuming it's because there aren't many people applying to Brown from my area.

I got the interview email as well, but it's not a selective process or anything right? Doesn't everyone get one after applying?

really? where does it say that, im curious.

I dunno I had mine I think before Christmas... maybe the 19 or 20th.

I thought everyone got one. I was called up by the person. Cool stuff.

Preparation: Look over your activities sheet for any things you wanna mention. Listen to some of your favorite music, or eat something you enjoy. RELAX. It's not going to make or break you... it should be laid back and just like meeting a new person for the first time. At least, that's how I approached mine.

As for attire: Some people say slacks and a shirt are the way to go. I've worn nice jeans and a shirt - not tucked in - to one interview, and to my Brown one I wore a nice pair of jeans and a sweater on the top. I don't think it's a very big deal, and it doesn't really say a thing about you.

hm, i turned in my application in mid-december and havent gotten an interview yet. is that unusual? i think i come from an area that will have a TON of applicants, though.

i dont have to do anything in order to get an interview, right? i just wait for an alum to call me?

I got an interviewer's email yesterday. I was surprised because I am from Argentina and live pretty far from Buenos Aires. I think it will have to be a phone interview though...

I want an interview. I think it will be great. I think that it would help me out, plus I'm sure it will be very informative. Ha, I basically had my own q and a session with the assistant soccer coach from brown, cause he was doing a college visit at my school and I was the only one there (out of 3) that had any chance of even applying (the other 2 just went to skip class and didn't even know what/where brown was).

"Interviews
Interviews are recommended but not required. Once your application has been received, an alumnus/a in your area is contacted. Where possible, this applies to international applicants as well. He or she will then contact you and, if you so desire, arrange a time and place to conduct an interview. Although we try to reach all of our applicants, we are not always able to do so due to the nature and demographics of this all-volunteer organization. Please keep in mind that it will not negatively affect your application if you do not meet with one of our alumni volunteers. As of the 2003-2004 academic year, we no longer offer on-campus interviews."

yeah, i had my entire application in at the end of november and still haven't been contacted for an interview, and when i emailed them to ask about it they sent me the exact same message as above, which also happens to be on their website. COOL.

props to other schools for contacting me within like 2 days of getting my app...

it is kinda random and depends whether your area director contacts people by your school or by hometown. I got contacted last week and have my interview today at 6:00, but my friend at my school who lives in different town has yet to be contacted. someytimes i guess it just works that way, but dont worry yet there is still plenty of time to be contacted.

I got contacted a few days ago, and I live in Germany. So yes, it just all depends on luck. Does anyone know how many interviews an alumni conducts a year, on average? I'm just kinda curious cos my interviewer told me he only had 2 last year.

How many interviews/alumni: Anywhere from 1 to 10 a year. That depends on where the alumni lives, how many applicants from the area, how many alumni volunteers in the area, and how many interviews the alum wants to do.

Alums have until March 1 to file the interview. Don't get concerned about not getting the call or email for another three weeks.

Got contacted today. I submitted my app online on Jan 1st.

I went for my interview today! Was very informal and was more like a conversation...

sly_vt: so the end of Feb is the deadline to have an interview then? Is this true for other ivy league schools? Just wondering cuz I havent heard nething from a Brown alum but I have from some other schools.

Fyi, I was contacted by interviewer 5 days after submitting my app on Jan 1st..

anth_03: I have no idea how other Ivies work. Sorry. All I know is the deadline for Brown's alumni write-ups is March 1.

The interviews are assigned by regional chairs (who are alumni); admissions has nothing to do with it. Some regional chairs are more prompt than others in making assignments. Then, once an alum gets a name of a student, I would imagine some are more prompt than others. Some see a deadline of March 1 and figure they have plenty of time, and don't contact the students until mid-February.

I am an interviewer.
We get 2-5 students, each, for EA and REG.
We meet for 20-30 minutes, at a library, coffee shop, etc, its basically a two-way informational interview. You can find out about Brown, Brown can find out about you.
There is nothing to prepare, just go and be yourself, and the interviewer will then fill out a brief questionnaire. The interviewer does not have access to your application or your materials. Sometimes a student will bring along a CV or list of activities, that we use as a jumping off point for the discussion.
Alumni interviewers do this because they love their school-- but they have other jobs and busy lives, and will get to you cheerfully long before the "due" date the beginning of MARCH.

If there isn't an interviewer in your area do they notify you of that, or do you just never get a call? There's a pretty good chance that there isn't one in my area.
