At most schools the interview is optional, how optional?... will not doing it actually hurt

Well, for me it didn't. I only did two interviews for my eight apps. But generally the smaller the school, the more important the interview. I'm not sure how the Ivies factor into this though, they're kinda just.. weird. =P

liberal arts value interviews more than others

interviews are also important for colleges that consider interest

I was reading A is for Admission by an ex-Dartmouth admissions officer, and it sounds like interviews, peer and teacher recs really dont hold that much weight in the admission process.... and im not the type of person that can relax for an interview so any advice from the collegebound would be nice.

i just had an interview at uchicago, so feel free to PM me

don't worry if you don't get called for one. if you have to set it up or you are contacted about one you should probably do it. adcoms may (fairly or unfairly) wonder why you refused an interview.
