I keep hearing (anecdotal stuff) about how you can actually set up an interview when you visit Stanford even though they do not officially offer interviews. Is this true?

I've never heard of any nor do I remember any of my friends mentioning it...

Never heard of it. I'm not saying it's not true, but again I'm pretty sure Stanford does not want nor offer interviews. I'm assuming these "interviews" were with admissions officers right?

No. Stanford explicitly says it does not do interviews, on campus or off campus. I'd link you to it, but I'm still trying to learn how to navigate the new admissions site. :p

Edit: here's the cached version of the old FAQ page:

Stanford | Applying to Stanford | Frequently Asked Questions

The new FAQ is very incomplete and still has to add most of that.

However, Stanford is starting a pilot interview program.

I know this is sort of off-topic, but I was browsing the new admissions website and found the stats profile for our class. I think it's pretty interesting and can be helpful to this year's applicants.

^^ very interesting. $4 million/year dedicated to undergrad research, more than any other college/university? That's pretty awesome.

I mean honestly if you want funding at Stanford you can get it. I don't know of anyone who ended up with no funding over the summer and I have friends doing independent research on the fuzziest of matters (usually harder to get funding) like my friend doing a sociology research over the summer.
