In general, how interesting and hard is Introductory Sociology? I ask because I will place out of my second semester english writing course (by getting an A in first semester english writing) and Intro Sociology is one of the few courses that meets at that time. I also want to get some of my social science credits out of the way

Intro to Sociology is sort of boring I just took it this past semester. If my teacher wasn’t really good I probably would have dropped it. The information is boring, but if your teacher is really passionate about it, its tolerable. The information is not hard at all, I’d read a few chapters the night before the test and manage a few A-.

At most colleges, it’s one of those classes that a lot of majors have to take or which people need to take for distribution requirements, so I think instructors tend to aim it at a general audience and not necessarily majors. Principles of Sociology remains the easiest college class I’ve taken so far. Of course, it really depends on the department, the section, the professor, and you as a student, but I think the general consensus is that it’s a good class to take to get requirements out of the way without risking your GPA too much. At most colleges. ;)

I’m jsut wondering because sociology is kinda a big class while the writing class is only limited to 10 people. I’m getting an A in my first semester class, so I don’t need to take second semester writing, but the second semester writing class is smaller and probably will have more individual attention. But sociology fulfills one of my soc science requirement so i dunno…

Intro to Sociology would be a good course to take, especially as a gen ed. Assuming you are a good student, the professor might make or break the experience you have. Ask around to see who is a good professor to take it with. If your time slot limits you to one choice you might not have a choice, but look up the professor. If he/she is decent or above, then take it.

As for testing out of English, at my school English I is more grammar and essays, and English II is reading literature and writing. If you are majoring in the social sciences or humanities, taking the English course might not be a bad idea.

ok, well now its either intro sociology or psychology…

My intro to sociology class was very reading heavy, but also really illuminating after all was said and done. We learned about sociology as a science, science as an institution, how society is structured and how that structure is perpetuated, and much more Most of our text was from the 19th and early 20th centuries.

Intro to psych followed a textbook. It was also really interesting (the lectures were more fun), but the only overlap I saw was when we covered social psychology. It was less cohesive and was broken down into chapters that introduced you to the different types of sociology and the classic experiments in each section.

My Soc class had 200+ people. The professor took attendance every class so I came every class. I worked on homework for other classes and brought in my laptop and watched Scrubs. We had 3 exams; one was take home and the other two where open book open notes. I got an A. It wasn’t very hard.
