Investment Banking may be a trendy major, but it will fail in the long run

It doesn't take a fool to know that investment bankers trade for their own profit and well being! It is clear that all of you, who go into this major mainly for the money, will do anything for the payoff! What will happen when we have a huge group of investment bankers frontrunning? Your job will be useless. Tell me your thoughts, but It doesn't matter because at this point investment banking is NOT a good career choice.

Too bad though, it is trendy so people will do it.

Investment Banking isn't a major. People go into the job it but only for like one or two years and then move onto other things.

Apparently those who do make it into Investment Banking don't really have to worry about anything because they're already in.

frontrunning? Did you just pull this word from an old article on hedge fund scandals? Investment Bankers don't do any trading either...

You obviously don't even understand what investment banking is.

ibanking encompasses trading, M&A and sales...

most of the time when we're talkign about ibanking, we're refferring to M&A.

I know investment banking isn't a major, but that is hardly the point.

As Tiberius said, people go into investment banking and hten move to other things. Well business is such a trendy major it produces a high level of inflation, a ton of people and not enough jobs. Well we all know what happens then!

Most business majors end up working as sales managers for taco bells and jobs like that. It's ok though, your loss! Taco bell's need managers. Not to mention business is the easist major.

make them tacos!

how is business the easiest major?

First rule: don't ever put something to an extreme!

Also, you make a big mistake when saying that business is the easiest major!

Salesman (institutional) and traders don't refer to themselves as investment bankers. They may work in the Investment Banking Division of a bank, but only corporate finance professionals (m&a and capital raising) are actually labled investment bankers.

Most business majors at any Top 50 business school are not working as restaurant managers. Many are in accounting, regular banking, corporate finance, marketing/advertising, and the myriad of jobs at large companies. The average sdtatrting salary is in the mid 40's which is twice what Taco Bell pays. If you want to find lots of liberal arts majors check the manager at the local Starbucks.

"Well business is such a trendy major it produces a high level of inflation, a ton of people and not enough jobs. Well we all know what happens then!"

lol, yes business produces a ton of people because business people are known for thier rapid reproduction capabilities. Anyways, it isnt like a ton of people just now decided to go into businesss. There were always people wanting to go into IB, and if they were driven enough they got them.

"It doesn't take a fool to know that investment bankers trade for their own profit and well being!"

Are you in the peace corp?

Thats like saying lots of people apply to top schools, so they are a bad idea. Getting into a bulgebracket firm is very difficult, you don't just send in a resume and get a job.

Investment bankers undergo a great deal of stress and long working hours. So the average lifespan of the career may not be that long.

I do have to say that as this field gets increasingly commoditized the fee scales will have to compress a bit. The competition is just too fierce.
