My son received an RD admission letter a few weeks back. Today he got invited to the spring preview 4-15 to 17th including a broadway show, and yankees game. They also offered to pay for his flights. The problem is that they have not shared any merit aid yet and they would like him to rsvp prior to March 8th. Merit aid plays a big part in his decision. He has been admitted to a couple of other schools with merit aid, and does not want to go to Fordham without a better package then the one he has been offered. He is also waiting to hear back from some other schools which won't happen until after he has to reply to the invitation.

We feel that he cannot respond positively and than not go. But it would be a waste of time and Money to go if they do not offer him aid.

I’m surprised he was not offered more aid. That program is reserved for Fordham’s top applicants, most of whom are either presidential scholars or semifinalist scholars. You might want to contact financial aid and see what’s up. There’s also a chance that you’ll be notified of an increased award.

He hasn’t been offered any merit aid, just early notification of acceptance stating he was being considered but would be sent something later, and now this invite. Do you think contacting them would be an okay thing to do. Don’t want to seem pushy.

This invitation is not for the typical student so it appears that Fordham wants to impress your S. In addition, his acceptance came before most RD decisions go out. It certainly seems that Fordham wants him. I would imagine that a strong merit aid package should follow, but until you get the award, its hard to know. Given the circumstances and the RSVP date, I think it is OK to call the school to try to get a reading on either how much the merit aid will be and/or if you will get the package before you have to RSVP. It seems like it is in the school’s best interest as well as your son’s to have him come out for the visit only Fordham is a real possibility for him. Congratulations.

In addition to an early acceptance as a RD applicant, your S was offered FREE airfare and tix to a Yankee game and Broadway show and you need to know in advanced what his package will be??? If he really isn’t jumping at the chance to come to NY under those circumstances, I can only wonder how high Fordham is on his list to begin with.

They certainly don’t treat all their admitted applicants with such fanfare so I would expect to receive a fantastic offer. Congratulations! Now come to NY and enjoy a fantastic weekend! :)

I was invited to the Spring Preview after being offered a full tuition scholarship. I only know about the scholarship because I called with financial aid questions.

i also received a full tuition scholarship and was invited to a special breakfast prior to the Spring Preview day on April 17th, but didnt hear anything about Broadway or Yankee tickets. Do they do this for everyone that receives a major scholarship or only certain applicants, and how did you find out?

Call! Sounds like you most probably have a merit scholarship! I’m a sophomore right now and I’m on the Dean’s Scholarship. Even so, I wasn’t even invited to the Spring preview! Haha.

For the school to be offering you even paid airfare to come visit, I personally feel that you should be assured that your merit scholarship would be a pretty decent package.

Furthermore, our campus is amazingly beautiful. You have to come see it for yourself to believe it. Most of my friends who chose Fordham in the end said that it was only after visiting the campus did they decide that Fordham is their one and only choice. If you have a chance to come check out, do come!

My son was invited to and went to this last year. It was an amazing weekend, which I believe helped to tip his decision towards Fordham. He received a Dean’s scholarship of $22,000/year, so it is not just the very top scholarship winners who get invited. We are also from outside of the NY metropolitan area and I believe that all of the people invited were from “flying distance away”. We live in Ohio and my son was actually one of the closest attendees. There were several from the west coast, several from Texas and many from areas of the midwest such as Chicago. In other words someone with better stats than my son and who ultimately received a better sholarship may not have been invited if they were from Long Island or New Jersey or Westchester. So I would say that your son is likely to be awarded a very nice scholarship, but it may or may not be full tuition. I would also agree that you could call the office of Financial Aid and see if you can learn more, but I strongly recommend not passing up this wonderful opportunity. Fordham really put on a great weekend. In addition to the Broadway play and Yankee game, your son has the opportunity to spend 2 nights in the dorm and to meet several of the Deans and to hear from Father McShane.

Was your son admitted EA or RD? Just curious if he might be getting something in the mail this next week. Seems weird that they would invite him to this and not give him any idea of merit aid.

“but no special invite yet to a special weekend”

This is only for students not from around the east coast. If you don’t get this it does not mean you won’t have a shot at large merit scholarships, specifically if you live on the coast.

As to SDmom2 I am sure if you call they can tell you about any new scholarships they may have given your son.

My S did Merit aid $22,000 per yr Deans Scholarship. He was invited to April 17th open house for admitted students.
Does anyone know if Fordham work with you if my S got a larger Merit award from another competitive school?

I was invited to the free April 15-17 trip as well, and am planning on attending.

Fordham isn’t very high on my list, but how could you turn down a free trip to New York?? It seems like all you’d have to pay for is maybe a cab ride from JFK to Fordham, and a meal or two.

I hope to meet you all there! Sounds like fun!

Tostudenttutor,
Did you apply ea or rd? If rd did they tell you what merit aid they would be offering? I think my s decided to go as well. Still trying to decide if we should call and ask.

SDmome2 . . . our D applied RD, got the early notice that she will be offered admissions, and she, too, has been offered the trip with reimbursed airfare to the Spring Review. She has accepted this gracious offer because-- altho’ she has been to NYC-- it is really important that she spend time at Fordham to know if this is the place for her. We are in CA. Her letter noted that she is under consideration for scholarship-- but “fit” is of primary importance to us right now . . . so this is a great opportunity :-)
