The local airport is CID, Cedar Rapids. Somewhere, I think I saw that SSTP would provide pickup. There may be some sort of information packet online. I assume they will be sending more specific information at some point in the near future. Iowa City is a really nice small college town, if you haven’t been. I think you guys will enjoy it. My son is coming from California too.

Also, just thought I’d mention that the MIT admissions website mentions Iowa SSTP as one of the summer science programs to consider, so it’s not really that unknown. The posts on CC seem sort of low compared to previous years, however, for some reason.

Hi,
I wanted to find out if it is mandatory to take 3 s.h of credit for the students enrolled in SSTP program. I have got this email from one of SSTP counselor where I have been asked to register for a 3 credit course which costs close to $1000.

Can I do without taking it?
Pls let me know.

I dont wanna take the 3 s.h course either. i guess you can email them and ask if its mandatory

One of the first questions they ask is “Briefly describe works, performances, honors, or awards which indicate your exceptional talent in this area”. But I’m not sure if I have anything that shows my “exceptional talent”… I haven’t participated in any science competitions (except for one which I didn’t even make to Round 2) or done any research before.

Would something like making a picture book explaining molecular bonding (a chemistry project for school) qualify? I have no idea what to put :|

Also the next question is “List any special classes or programs in which you have participated related to this area”. Should I really only list the names of the programs I’ve attended, or can I elaborate a little on what I did at the program (learned about medical professions, did lab experiments, etc.)

I’m also confused about the application process. It says:
“School Grade Report. Please scan and upload”

Does that refer to a quarter grade report I get every quarter, or an official transcript?
My current year’s grades won’t be on my transcript, so I don’t know which one I should upload.

Ohh hmm. I’m not sure about that either. Shoot. This is so last-minute -____- Is it too late to send them an email asking about it?

I think it’s probably a transcript though. Quarter grade report won’t show a lot of information… Are you SURE your current year’s grades aren’t on your transcript? Has your first semester not ended yet?

Where did you get the questions? Or is this different from this program?:
[Secondary Student Training Program (SSTP) / Belin-Blank Center Summer Programs](http://www.education.uiowa.edu/html/belinblank/old/summer/programs/9-11/sstp/)

Also I sent an email, and they want your semester report card uploaded. They also want a transcript through postage mail. And archaic, yeah my counselor said only final grades go on our transcripts, they only send semester grades to colleges

What?! By mail… are you serious…
But it doesn’t say anywhere on the website or application that we need to mail the transcript. Shoot I’m going to be gone tomorrow through Thursday, I don’t have time to ask about it or get an official transcript mailed to them.

Do you think an unofficial transcript would work? My transcript includes my semester 1 grades. I really really hope it’ll work.

Stupid procrastination -_____-

“Where did you get the questions? Or is this different from this program?”
No, that’s the program I’m talking about. The questions were on the original application page that asked for basic information, before you went to the main app page where you can edit your responses, submit teacher emails, etc.

I agree, they don’t mention transcripts, so I’m going to upload a semester grade along with my unofficial transcript. I doubt my transcript will get there by March 1.
I’m going to ask again if I can do that

Deadline has been extended to March 8!

do y’all live in iowa? I live in texas and am applying for it too! what are y’all’s essays like? I NEED TO GET IT DONE!! IM A PROCRASTINATOR TOO!! AHH

Nope I live in California! Hopefully location doesn’t play a factor in admission!

My essay is pretty horrible so far… I have to admit, I’m terrible at writing these “Why should I be accepted over all the other just-as-qualified and more-qualified students?” essays. Ugh.
PROCRASTINATION BUDDIES xD

I doubt that either location or school matters. Three people from my CA school (including myself, of course) went last year.

Whoa, three people from one school?
Hmm. I think I probably know who you are (though you probably don’t know me) and one other SSTP person as well, and I can’t help comparing my (lack of) “honors” and feeling quite discouraged.

Hi, this is a mother. Do you know how selective is this program? my kid got the acceptance e-mail today. Wish you all the best!

Accepted! Does anybody know how selective the program is?
