@AlmightySadist I submitted one longer short story of mine–it was a little over ten pages, but I couldn’t cut it without removing important passages from the story. In my statement of purpose, I tried to talk about my interest in writing without sounding condescending or over-bearing. I discussed my favorite writers, too—Nabokov, Gertrude Stein, Jhumpa Lahiri—because I think they say a lot about me as a writer and a person. What about you? Hopefully we’ll both get in.
@ziying Sewanee was great! Besides the terrible rain during the middle of the program, it was fantastic. Plenty of time to write and think, but also to hang out.

Is UVa competitive? The fact that it is rolling admissions (?) makes me more hopeful of my chances.
@fitzgirl22
That’s sounds awesome!
For my personal statement… Um.
Well, let’s just say I kinda painted myself in an oddballish fashion. XD
I applied because I needed something to do, so my statement of purpose was really um… Wacky.
I talked about my heavy involvement in the fanfiction community (laugh at me) and how I now wanted to pursue more realistic writing.
I don’t think I mentioned any favorite authors…
I then talked about how much I hated writing growing up. Hated. HATED.
But I wrote how writing later became important to me, due to the fact my mother is more or less, illiterate. So I should feel blessed about having a passion for writing.
It was quick and complicated.
Get in and get out. Lol.

@AlmightySadist The subject line was (creatively) “Accepted Email”, and it started out with the date and “Congratulations! We are delighted to be able to offer you placement in this summer’s program…” The decision was in the email. And yeah, UVA was probably the one I was most nervous about out of it, Bard, and EPGY, but I was relatively confident. I had gotten lots of feedback from teachers, peers, etc.
For Kenyon, how has everyone been writing their 300 word essay? Mine is not so great
Mine was pretty terrible. I did a backwards chronology thing outlining my journey as a writer, but gosh it’s hard to write anything substantial in 300 words. @potterworld
I felt the same way! And I wonder how they will be able to determine a person’s writing skill by simply looking at that 300-word essay.
Soooo nervous bruh! :-S
I keep checking Submittable just incase they rejected me early. XD
I wanna think positive, but I’m tempted to research the program… but what if I don’t get in?? I’ll get all hype for nothing. :((
Oh well… love is the most risky of gambles.
Think positive! I’m sure you will be fine How many programs did you apply?
@ziying
I was gonna apply to Kenyon, but they wanted the financial info and the tax summaries yatta yatta, so I didn’t bother to. I don’t wanna go through all the trouble of securing tax information, finding somewhere to scan them, filling out the rest of the information, and then not get in.
Besides, 300 words doesn’t seem like a proper way to gauge someone’s writing ability.
I see:) Good luck with Iowa then!
Yeah dude. Ima def need it. :))
I’m making other summer plans so if I don’t get in, I won’t be completely devastated. XD xD
IM SO HYPED FOR THE SCHOLASTIC NATIONAL RESULTS
@GrandBudapest UVA isn’t that competitive. They’re accepting late applications too this year, which makes me think that it got even less competitive.
Is Iowa the most competitive of all these programs?
@potterworld
I was gonna enter but I found out about it after the deadline. XD XD
There’s always next time tho. I hope you do well!
@fitzgirl22
I think so, according to my research. I think it’s because Iowa hosts the Iowa Writers Workshop, and that’s supposed to be the most competitive program in writing to get into.
Iowa Young is supposed to be the kiddy version I think?
Has anyone here won any awards in writing?
Just so I’m not feelin behind because I have nada.
Probably the scholastic or placed in the national young arts, I’m guessing?
I only did the scholastic writing awards where received national medals in poetry and memoir (gold and American voices) this year!! I’m so happy
