@aroving
Just one short story and an excerpt. I barely reached 10 pages.
@AlmightySadist who are your favourite writers?
@aroving
Hmm… I don’t really know.
My fav books though be Junie B. Jones, Goosebumps, and Dr. Suess books.
XD Jk. Jk.
I love John Milton, Stephen King is so-so, and maybe John Grisham.
I really admire the paradoxes Lao Tzu uses.
But I don’t really have a favorite, and I love all genres… Except Sci-Fi and Medieval Fantasy. I’m more into Thriller, Horror, and Mystery.
@ziying I’m from California, too! Also I’m so glad you’re applying to Sewanee. I went there last year and it was AMAZING. Everyone was so nice and talented Feel free to ask me any questions.

I’m also applying to Kenyon and UVa. The thing about UVa is that I need 10 (don’t recall the exact number, I know it was a pretty large number, though) pages of fiction! I’m more of a poetry person
Kenyon scares me just because I don’t think my rec letter was that good and neither will be my personal statement. But at the same time, my poetry isn’t amazing, either…so I guess things cancel out.
@GrandBudapest
You went to Sewanee??
You must be really good! I think you definitely have a shot at Iowa then! Probably UVA too! Kenyon, well, don’t know how ANYONE could truly showcase their talents in under 300 words. ._.
I’m applying to Kenyon as well. I got into UVa last year but went to a lesser-known three-week program at Bard College at Simon’s Rock instead. It was an incredible experience, I can answer any questions
Considering applying to UVa again… is it worth it, do you think?
@AlmightySadist Like how are we supposed to write our personal statements in a creative way or something? Or just do a “normal” one?
Haha, thank you! But I felt like everyone at Sewanee was much better. They inspired me a lot!
Are you considering applying there?
EDIT: Why are you still awake when it should be way past your bedtime in VA!
@GrandBudapest
I tend to stay up late so… Yeah…
And I’m thinking about Sewanee… Not too sure.
@pielovereternal
Well if you got in last year, I don’t see why you can’t try and go this time. The weather is nice. It’s been really warm this winter.
10-30°F!
Wow cool! I just submitted my Sewanne application yesterday! How was Sewanne? I’m an international student and I’m not sure about my chance of being accepted haha.
@pielovereternal
How did the acceptance letter start out?
I think it’s just exciting to be accepted anywhere.
Were you nervous? Neutral? Confident?
And did they give you your decision in the email or through a link?
Hi, I’m just joining this discussion. I’m interested in attending the fiction workshop at IYWS, provided I get accepted. What courses are you guys interested in?
I went to UVA YWW last year. Best experience I’ve ever had. Everyone was so open, accepting, supportive and encouraging. The environment was very comfortable for any writer. The friends I’ve made there will last a lifetime. If anyone has questions feel free to ask me.
I was going to apply to Iowa or Kenyon, but I’m likely just going to return to UVA’s program anyway, haha.
@SirSly I was considering applying to UVA as well, although Iowa is definitely my first choice. Possibly Kenyon or the Juniper Institute at Amherst too. So far, I’ve only applied to Iowa. Is it too late to apply to UVA? I know it’s first-come, first-serve, so could I still stand a reasonable chance of being accepted?
Oh, I’m a sophomore by the way.
@fitzgirl22 It’s not too late to apply to UVA! The deadline is March 1, which gives you a little more than 2 weeks to type up your application and ask a teacher to submit a recommendation! Only after the deadline will the “first come,first serve” policy come in effect, so trust me, you have a good chance!
Okay. Great. Thanks! What program did you take there? @SirSly I’m mostly interested in fiction writing–not big on poetry or anything of that sort.
@fitzgirl22 I was in the Scriptwriting program $$! This year I’m hoping to be in either fiction or non-fiction writing!
If you end up attending UVA YWW, you’ll make so many great friends from your workshop, your dorm mates, etc. There’s also electives you sign up for everyday, which is a great way to make friends from those in different workshops than yours.
@fitzgirl22
I’m doing fiction too!
What kind of pieces did you submit?
What kind of stuff did you mentiom in your statement of purpose?
@SirSly
Are you from VA or did you come in out of state? How was the level of writing there?
