iowa young writer's workshop 2017

i got rejected too, from session i for fiction :// super awkward bc i had a scholarship from the anthony quinn foundation to attend. luckily they offered to pay for another program, which is awesome and something im so thankful for.

ill apply next year for sure but i dont think getting rejected is bad (esp if youre younger) bc itll make me work harder next year. plus i have experience w apps (for college) and rejection. it sucks not to get in but i always have senior yr.

congrats to everyone who was accepted!

nothing from iowa at all for me.

me neither…wonder why??

Just got the email… i was in!!!

Congrats! I am in as well…session 1

now that was worth waiting for…must of saved the acceptances for last. Whew!

I got in for Session 1! All the workshops look so nice, I’m so torn between poetry and fiction. Good luck to all!

I’m in for session 1!

We should start a facebook group or something.

Hi, wondering if you could post your admission email here to let us view (take your name and contact # out). I am put on waitlist. Thanks a lot and Congrats!

@Flying2

Dear [ ],

On behalf of the selection committee, we are pleased to invite you to the 2017 Iowa Young Writers’ Studio summer residential program, Session 1. Congratulations! This year we received over 650 applications for 144 spots, making the admissions process the most competitive yet. Your application was outstanding. We anticipate a full house of 72 young writers in Session 1, from across the United States and beyond, and we hope you feel as excited to meet your peers as we are to meet you.

Session 1 will convene from Sunday, June 18 to Saturday, July 1. Please plan to arrive in Iowa City before 4 pm on the afternoon of Sunday, June 18. In a separate Acceptance Packet to be e-mailed to you and to your parent or guardian shortly, you will find housing details and transportation information, as well as other important information about your participation in the Studio. Please read the Acceptance Packet carefully, and return the necessary forms to us by e-mail, as scanned pdfs or jpegs. If you are unable to scan and e-mail forms you can mail them to us at the address below.

The cost for the two-week summer residential program is $2,350. A $250 deposit is due by April 21. The balance of payment is due by June 1, 2017. A bill will be e-mailed to you and your parent/guardian shortly from the Frank N. Magid Center for Undergraduate Writing. This bill will contain instructions about how to pay your deposit and fee. The fee covers room, board (3 meals a day), tuition, textbooks, workshop expenses, and transportation from the Cedar Rapids airport or Iowa City bus station. It does not include transportation to and from Iowa, health care expenses, supplies such as notebooks and pens, or personal expenses such as snacks and laundry money.

Please note that you will not receive any communications from us through Submittable.

If you have any questions about the Studio, please don’t hesitate to call. Also, if your plans change, and you will not be attending the Studio, please let us know as soon as possible so we can notify one of our alternates.

We hope to see you in Iowa City in June!

Best regards,
[director name]

@crimsonbleeding2022 Looks like it! I guess Iowa defines waitlist and alternate differently o_O Sorry, my bad! Didn’t mean to worry you.

To answer your question, it just seems like if space opens up then they’ll contact you, nothing you can really do to get off of it (unless you want your name to be taken off the list to not be considered). It doesn’t seem like the thing where you can email them to reaffirm interest or send supplements, like college.

Thank you so much @grandlv

@thelittleswimmer I think it might have been a mistake when they said they don’t have a waitlist, like they didnt have a waitlist in preceding years and they didn’t get rid of it on the form email. I’m guessing there mightve been something wacked up in their system bc i received an email that they didn’t receive my sample on submittable, but when i checked my app, it was there.

or they might just not want people asking about spots (but this seems like kind an unprofessional way to handle things so i doubt it)

ah; if there are any alumni on this thread: how many people do they usually accept all the waitlist? i would love to attend.
CONGRATS to all those accepted!!

What are the benefits of this program for college applications?
I’m normally never one to go to a program solely because of its prestige/college benefits, but I’m not sure if I want to go to Iowa or other programs that are at the same time, and this information would help my decision immensely.

@illbeyourmirror I’m in session 1 too - I think making a Facebook group would be a great idea!

@raptorw I’m not sure, but in terms of prestige for summer humanities programs, I think it’s second only to TASP. If not, it’s definitely up there. Either way, I’m sure there’s not that much of a difference in terms of the boost it’ll give to your application v. the other programs you want to attend. In general, people who are accepted to these types of programs are already excellent candidates on their own, hence the correlation between acceptance to the summer programs and acceptance to top colleges. I’m not positive that they actually help at all on their own…

A benefit I do see from attending Iowa is that it’ll strengthen your writing a lot, which can help for essay + creative writing contests and even your college app. It also just seems like a really positive, rewarding experience and a chance to meet and interact with a bunch of fascinating people from around the world. But then again, this is true of a lot of other great programs.

Ultimately, you should choose what you think you’ll enjoy more. It’s important to be able to enrich yourself during the summer while also remembering to have fun.

Good luck with your decision making!

is there a fb group already?

There’s one for Kenyon

Does anyone know when alternates will be notified if they have a spot in the workshop?
