IR Program Denver, Boston, Michigan

Hi Everybody,

I was recently accepted into the undergraduate IR program for the University of Denver, Boston University, and the University of Michigan. I'm having a really hard time deciding between all three of them because each school has their pros and cons. For example, Denver has an excellent masters program and there is a possibility of me doing dual degree. Boston is located in an international hotspot, and I hear that the University of Michigan also has an excellent undergraduate program. Can anyone give me some words of wisdom? Thank you :)

I’m going into my sophomore year at UMich next year as an IR major. Last year was actually the first year they introduced International Studies (which is equivalent to IR) as a major (it used to only be a minor). So I wouldn’t say it’s an excellent program yet as it has just been established and they only have one concentration advisor… but what’s great about UMich is they provide you with a lot of international opportunities. They have the International Center (different from Study Abroad) and the International Institute, which handles the IR major. There are 4 paths within the major: Security, Political Economy, Global Environment & Health, and Comparative Culture.

I’d say UMich as a whole would provide you with a great undergraduate experience because it is such a big university, so there are endless opportunities on campus to enhance your academic understanding of IR. The IR major is new though, so I wouldn’t expect it to be perfect…

UMich is actually ranked by the Foreign Policy magazine as one of the best places for undergrad. IR.

Although it is a new major, the strong Political Science department would more than make up for it. In fact perhaps you’d like to be a Poli.Sci major there and just concentrate in IR.
But Michigan wins in this one, for sure.
