Is 20+ units really that difficult?

I'm going in as a freshman in the fall, but I was just planning on taking four lower level classes plus a few freshman seminars and that approximately comes out to 20 units. Would it really be that hard to balance everything?

Won’t be too hard since it is just seminars. But i find most freshmen seminars pointless, at least excessive to take 4 of them in one quarter.

ditto. good idea in theory, but usually not very well executed.

Are freshmen seminars a lot of work though? What exactly do you do?

I took Free Will and Film and it met for 2 hrs a week. It was a chill seminar that I’d actually recommend - we just watched a movie and had to write a 1 page paper each week on it  I’ve heard some seminars took a lot of work though…lots of hw on top of the meetings.

Taking one is nice - taking 4…let’s just say 1-2 hrs a week times 4 = a lot of time required for 4 units of p/np. It might not be a ton of work, but you could do a lot more with that time. Like, meeting people. Working 8 hrs a week and making cash. Studying for your 16 units and getting A’s. List goes on.

For the most part, I enjoyed the freshman seminars that I took.

I see your point but you could really say that about anything. “Why are we getting hammered at this party when we could better effectively use our time studying!?!?!?!?!” It’s just whatever you find your interests and priorities to be at that time.

Yeah, I agree that the occasional seminar might be really exciting and enlightening, but most of them are just OK. You’ll get less excited about them over time.

But for now, I think it’s a good idea to take a few while you have the chance though I’d agree with momosky that 4 is kind of excessive on top of 16 units. You’ll probably get sick of attending at least one of the seminars and they do entail a bit of outside reading or work (though you can probably get away without doing it, I don’t recommend already slacking off your first quarter). Stick with the most interesting 2 for now, 3 if you really can’t trim the list down.

Don’t forget you do have a chance to drop a seminar within the first 4 weeks of the quarter if you find you don’t like one. So I guess it’s pretty safe to stick with 4 for now but be aware you’ll likely drop at least one as you attend them and re-assess your interest level

@KingsElite, I think my point was more “We’ve been partying and getting hammered 4 days a week and could do a lot more if we partied less” I read that you took 3 seminars in the other thread, so I guess we have different opinions on what is “too many.”

I think it depends on what seminars you sign up for, too. I remember some seminars met twice a week or 3-4 hours a week and I could see multiple seminars like that eating up your time. No matter what your interests and priorities are, moderation is good.

Ha ha. I was being facetious with the partying example. For me some of the freshmen seminars were 50 minutes a week and I could spend maybe an hour a week on the work from them. Some take longer I guess. I don’t know. I just thought they were fun (some of them). I actually took 5 of them though. It was just 3 in that one quarter.
