Is 33 on ACT a good score?

Hi,

My daughter took the ACT first time and she got a combined score of 33, (M 35, Eng 34, Reading 34, Science 29), is this a good score? Does she have any chance to get admission into 7yr Med Program?

Her PSAT is 215 and she is writing her SAT this week.

Thanks for your response.

This year’s national average for the ACT is a 20.7. The highest you can get is a 36. I’d say that’s a great score. By the way, what medical school is your daughter applying to? A 33 will only get her into so many med. programs.

Thanks for the response. She is planning to UCLA, Brown, Boston, or some top schools.

In general, 32+ is the “threshold” to where you are in the top tier applicants for Ivy Leagues. They generally do not make that much differentiation from a 33 to a 32, or a 35 to a 34 or something like that.

Keep in mind all accelerated med programs have very low acceptance rates. There is also the taint of that relatively low science score, and will attract the attention of the admissions officers there.

UCLA and Brown and many other top schools are reaches for almost everyone. If she does not get in, it won’t be because she’s not intelligent, but a 32 is definitely in the competitive range. If by Boston College, with an acceptable GPA there is a good chance for her, but no promises!

Good luck. If possible, it may be ideal to retake it (most students aiming to get into top-tier universities will retake the ACT many times) and bring up the science score. See what she missed on that section, and if it was a time or content issue.

She probably has just as good a chance of getting into those accelerated med programs as any other smart candidate. She would also need clinical atmosphere volunteer work, a rigorous science and math schedule, etc.

Thanks for your reply; She is planning to take in September again to improve her score.
