Is a 1440 SAT score good for selective colleges?

Hello,

I just took the SAT and scored a 1440 (650 W&R 790 M). Is this score good for selective colleges, especially Brown, because I applied early decision? Do you think I should take the SAT again or work on something else like taking the ACT?

Thank you

Your math score is great! Your English score is below the 25% for Brown, so that could hurt you.

Sure, you could take it again with study or try the ACT. You don’t have a lot of time, though.

@gardenstategal but will brown reject me because of the sat score?

I cannot answer that. 20% of the students at Brown had an English score of 690 or lower, so the real question is what made them compelling in spite of that. Were they athletes, legacies, non- English speakers, exceptionally talented in some other way math, music, etc that made the score seem inconsequential?

You are swimming upstream on this, but it doesn’t mean it’s impossible. But you will need to be bringing something else to them that they want.

As an FYI, applicants whose native language is not English don’t get a pass here; if anything, given how competitive admissions are for international students, their scores are often higher than average.

For the OP, it’s difficult to answer your question in a vacuum. Yes, a 650 is not as competitive with many applicants, but scores are just one part of the application. For Brown, it is what it is at this point. For RD applications, if you’ve taken the SAT more than twice, then your score is unlikely to dramatically improve. Perhaps try ACT, although you’re running out of time. Make sure you’re also applying to matches and safeties. Good luck.

@skieurope should I take the ACT and leave the SAT score alone?
