Hey guys,
I've been taking a lot of practice tests and my scores are all around the 1550 range out of 2400.
Is getting a 1550 a bad or good score?
As in, it's normal to be getting this number?
I've been studying really hard for the past year now, so I hope it's good..
Thanks!

1550 for all three sections? Or for just critical reading and math?
If it’s the first, it’s definitely normal to be getting that score. I think it’s a couple points above the US average. However, if you have been studying really hard for the past year and you’re still at 1550/2400, you might need to rework your studying methods.

If it’s 1550/1600, that’s a really great score.

Try the ACT.

What is the breakdown of your score? (Math, Writing, Critical Reading)

50th percentile of the U.S. is a 1500.

It depends on the college you want to go to, I guess.

Obviously he has a 1550/1600. This is CollegeConfidential.

^Agree. It isn’t sane for someone to get a 1550/2400 after studying REALLY HARD, even if such a person was an International who has just got to know English!!!

“I’ve been taking a lot of practice tests and my scores are all around the 1550 range out of 2400.”

He said its out of 2400.

You should try new techniques to bring your score up, it’s not a bad score but if you want to got to a really good school you need more.

Good luck! =)

^^^^Oh, God!!! How can I be clumsy, blind and dumb!! I am sorry, OP. Indeed, you need to change your method of studying. For:
CR: TRY to finish Barron’s 3500 words.
W: Read A LOT of great books, news and famous novels. Plus, study a GREAT deal of Grammar.
M: Specify and then, finish all the required SAT’s Maths’ rules.

Do A LOT of practice. Do LIMIT urself to CollegeBoard’s Official SAT Study Guide, Barron’s Hoe To Prepare For The SAT, Barron’s 2400 and ANY REAL SAT test you may find, other than this, most books do only BLUFF.

And, Best Of Luck!!

It’s an average score for an American. Not very good, I’d say, but not too bad.

For writing, familiarise yourself with all the grammar rules (check Silverturtle’s guide, it’s really detailed). And read How to Write a 12 Essay in 10 days for the essay section.

For reading, UNDERSTAND why you get each question wrong, and remember that you can ALWAYS find the answer in the text. I used to choose the answer based on what I thought was the most logical and correct, but sometimes that’s not the case, because the answer must ALWAYS be based on the text. And memorise all the words from Direct Hits. If you want, you can also check out other word lists like Sparknotes’ 1000 SAT words.

And for math, it’s just doing practice sums over and over again. Most of the questions will always be of the same type, so make sure you FULLY UNDERSTAND why you get a question wrong and KNOW how to do the same type of question in the future. Check out Perfect800 for more practice questions.

1550 is the average score for American students. Whether or not that is “bad” or “good” depends on the schools that you are applying to. I think that you should definitely start studying a lot more (use the blue book and time yourself) and it should not be that difficult to at least get to an 1800

He edited it after I posted my question.

@OP: Where do you want to go for college?

not sure.
probably uni. of maryland - college park

College Park considers only Critical Reading and Math–not Writing.

The bottom quartile (i.e., the score at which one quarter of UMCP’s freshmen scored lower and three quarters scored higher) is 580 CR, 620 M.

1550 for all 3 sections could be a problem for College Park.

1550 won’t cut it for UMCP. There are many other MD colleges that a 1550/2400 would be fine for.
