Is a 3.94 (UW) or 4.6 (W) better?

Trying to figure out which one to report (counselor said I could choose). Thanks!

  • Also, would the decision be different if it was between 3.94 (UW) and 4.85 (W)?

Most/maybe all colleges take UW scores because the weighting systems at high schools vary. Since admissions officers will see your transcript, they will be able to see how many honors and AP/IB/DE courses you have taken and judge accordingly. They have their own formula for evaluating and comparing students. A 3.94 UW GPA is a fine record for applying to any school.

A lot of colleges will recalculate your GPA according to their own method. The weighted has little meaning because high schools weigh differently from each other. Colleges are going to look at individual classes and grades on your transcript anyway.

Presumably you will send a transcript, so it doesn’t really matter.

UW tends to be more comparable/meaningful, so I’d probably send that.

Weighting’s vary, so they typically aren’t taken at face value. At a school where honors/APs add 0.5 weighting, you weighted would be impossibly high. At my D’s school, a 4.85 would be outside the top 10%.
