is a 3 on ap chem good?

im pretty sure i got a solid 3, with a possibility of a 4, ((hopefully)knocks on wood) but it seems like everyone on cc gets 5's. is a 3 on the chem exam good, considering the overall difficulty of chemistry?

i'm in the exact same boat as you (3 or 4).... no, i don't think it's good, most good colleges dont give credit for a 3. at least it is passing, though.

Ugh, I think I'm going to get a three, which is depressing since I don't think it reflects how much chem I actually know..anyway. I'm not even looking for college credit, but I hope colleges don't look at that grade and assume I know nothing.

a 3 is passing. Chem tends to give students more trouble than most exams and the material is pretty diffucult. A 3 is kinda medicore, but shows that u prolly now a decent amount of info. A 4 is good on chem .Of course like any exam a 5 is very good.

depends what college you wanna go to. Many colleges don't even accept AP chem if you get a 5 let alone a 3 because they want you to take their own intro chem classes. however, a 3 is passing but the percentage is like 30% right which is kinda low dont u think..

I thought 3 was 50% not 30%?

CC just has high standards...I mean, think about it. It's a (semi) college level coarse.

Approach with the mindset on how much you learned, rather than what you get on the test score. Most likely if you want to pursue something in the science field you would have to take that intro-level class again in college. That's when it really counts

3 is 'good', because it's passing.
it might not earn you college credit, but at least it shows that you pass and know what you're doing, for the most part.

in terms of college admissions, i don't think they care too much about your AP score. of course if you passed, its a good thing. but if you don't, its no biggie.

I think a 3 on the chem exam is closer to around 35% or so. 50% is a 4, and about 65% is a 5: it's one of the more highly curved exams. Those are the guidelines I used with a practice test last year: I'm not sure how it's changed after the reformatting of the test (which was the year I took it, and got a 4).

Don't feel bad about getting a 3: you passed, which shows you do understand the concepts of chemistry to some extent--perhaps not proficiently, but you know the overall concepts to an extent that the CollegeBoard and many universities consider appropriate. Even getting a 2 shows you learned something, even if it wasn't much! You learned something, and in the end that's all that matters :) (unless you really wanted to get out of intro chem at a school that won't take a 3, in which case, no, it's no good! Just kidding!).

come on guys, you're all too picky. The fact is, you cannot be stupid and get a 3 like on some other AP exams, you actually have to know quite a bit. Even Northwestern gives 1quarter of credit for a 3 or 4, so then you only have to take 2 quarters of chem instead of the usual 3. So no, a 3 is not bad, even a really good college acknowledges that it is not.

for chem, a 3 could get you out of 1 credit in college.. northwestern, for instance (#14 on USNews) accepts a 3 and a 4 for 1 credit of chem... a 5 for three creds of chem... notice that this is the ONLY 3 they accept.. everything else is predominately 5's only.. this shows the difficulty of chem... so a 3 can get you out of something, potentially

The university I'm going to accepts a 3 for credit on each exam, though your final course placement for your next class in that subject will change depending on your score.

MIT gives 0 credits for a 5. lol. =)

^ yeah. Chem is one of those things that many sciecne orientated schools don't give credit for. My ap chem teacher told me that if i plan to go into engineering or some other science related field, i will prolly have to retake the material even if i get a 5 (which i did last year)

Yea, the school I'm going to gives no credit for a 5 on Biology or a 5 on Chemistry so I don't even know why I took them even though I'm hoping for a 5 on both.

That's quite amazing! you just might be the kind of person mentioned in the premise of the thread.
