Is a 30 on the ACT decent for WUSTL?

Hi,

I recently got a 30 on the ACT (34 m, 31, reading, 30 english, 24 S (yeah ouch)). I'm thinking about applying either as a business or engineering major, so will my low science score hurt me for either? Also, how good is WUSTL for business because all I hear about it for is Premed/Med?

Try it again and try to get that science up. I thought it was a lot easier the second time through...

I think a low science score will definitely hurt for engineering. I'd definitely try it again, because a 30 is at or below the 25th percentile.

19382: a 30 is definitely not at or below the 25th percentile, it's at or above the 97th or something percentile. I got a 33 on the ACT and that in the 99th percentile and was offered a scholarship from washu. i think your score is fine.

19382 was referring to the 25th percentile at Wash U, which is a 30 ACT.

I think you should retake because you have a lot of room for improvement in science

opps...sorry...ha...now i get it.

i got a 32 on the act, 34 if superscored and i just got into olin yesterday. i don't know how much weight they put onto act scores but most colleges will overlook a slightly lower act for a solid gpa

well washu does superscore, as mentioned above, so that leaves a lot of room for raising one section at the risk of lowering another. My first ACT i got a 30 on the science section...the second time I got a 36 science.

Oh and the best part is I did absolutely nothing different to make that jump. IMO it just depends on the test.

Let me give you an invaluable tip for the science section which I got from College Confidential. Don't read the passages (except the one passage which is all reading). Go directly to the questions. You can figure out almost 100% of them just by looking at the pictures and graphs. It's the only way I could get through the whole section and I went from like a 24 to a 29 with that tip. And because Wash U superscores (takes the highest from different tests) you can only do better by taking it again.

Agreed with amazon^...I went from having a 25 to a 32 on the science section.

Try to get a 31 - 32. That would translate to something like 1380 - 1430 on the SAT. Also, if you really want to go to Wash U. show lots of interest and apply ED.

okay, I have some new info to add on to this:
1. My family and some friends are planning on visiting a few schools during summer, and I may make WUSTL one of them. Since I know they love people who show interest, would this help?

I'm considering applying ED/EA to a few schools: WUSTL, Northwestern, Duke, Stanford, Yale. I've pretty muched forgotten all about stanford and yale (although stanford is my ultimate/favorite dream school ever :(), and Duke (my second dream school) I think I'm starting to move away from since I doubt I'll get in. So if I apply to WUSTL ED, how much will that help?

Forget engineering, what if I apply to either College of Arts and Sciences or the business school. What are my chances then?

Note: Right now I have a 3.897 UW GPA, but I should finish high school with around a 3.85-3.87, or at very worst 3.8 UW for fresh-senior year because I missed a few days due to a dental procedure, and my grades aren't doing so well right now

*class rank UW right now = 38/515. Weighted = 30/515. Right now I'm top 6%, but will probably wind up finishing high school in the lower end of top 10%

If you apply to WUSTL ED, it helps a TON because it shows the utmost interest--but only because it is binding. If you want to try your hand at getting into the other schools on your list (which I highly recommend) don't apply early to WUSTL.
Definitely do the visit. Interview while on campus if possible. Communicate to them that they are one of your very top choices.

I got accepted to WashU with an SAT score of 1890 which is super duper low. So I think a 30 is good enough and a whole lot better than my 1890 SAT score, so you do have a decent chance at getting in.

Guys, the key to the science section is to NOT READ the passages! Go straight to the questions and refer to the graphs. The first time I read everything and got a 27 in science. Second time I read nothing and got a 35. Simple as that.

EDIT: Oh wait, people said that above me. I agree with them!

^^^

well, i think you need to read the passages when comparing the conflicting scientist opinion section ;)
