Is it too low or worth a try?
It is around the 25th percentile, so it is still in the admission range although the chance is low.
worth a try
As billcsho said, it is around the 25th percentile. This is for the portion of the 2017 class who reported their ACT scores to the school. It’s probably a little higher than 25th percentile for the whole class when also looking at the ACT equivalents of the portion who reported their SAT scores. So there is a chance, but the rest of the application (GPA, extracurriculars, essays, etc.) probably has to be strong.
There has been much more applicants submitted ACT scores than SAT to UMich. Students with ACT 31 may have higher or lower SAT scores, however, most students would choose to submit the better or comparable test scores. It is unlikely to have a significant deviation.
What about a 1390(new) SAT score? Is that considered lower than a 31 ACT?
1390 is slightly higher than the 25th percentile of last admission cycle.
^^^ Correct. Not a huge difference. But their published old SAT 25th percentile of 1910 corresponds approximately to an ACT of 28. And their new SAT 25th percentile of 1350 corresponds approximately to an SAT of 30. In any case, 31 is still on the low end and will need to be compensated for with other factors. A couple years ago, my son got in with an ACT of 32, which was mediocre but he had a gpa around 4.0 and good EC’s.
I have only 2 EC ( both sports) because from where I’m from EC are not as much valued as here in the US. I’m applying as an international and that is why I’m worried
@pupulerain Again, the SAT scores have a much smaller sample size. Don’t rely on the so called concordance table. Each school put different weights on different section scores. If you look at the admission stat from last year, you would see the outrage SAT mid 50 scores. In addition, admission stat is slightly higher than enrolled freshmen stat.
I got in with a 31 EA this fall. If your essays are good and have good ECs you have a chance.
Not one but two students in my hall got in LSA with 30 ACT/ 1350 SAT and 3.7 uw gpa last year.
And they are keeping up with the work better than some of the others with 34/1540 4.0’s.
^ It’s not uncommon for students who had to struggle more in HS (eg, those scoring lower on standardized tests) to be more accustomed to the harder work of college than those who got easy A’s in HS.
Standardize test score is not a reliable way to assess the students’ ability. One may prep really hard over a period of time to get a great score. Also, many students could not afford to retake the test to improve the score. That is why it is considered less important than GPA and course rigor at UMich.
I got in with a 31 ACT RD!!!
Definitely worth a try, I got in with a 30!
I got into LSA honors with a 31 and 13 AP classes. It all comes down to grades, essays, and ECs
Are you in-state or OOS? Michigan might judge these apps separately, and it’s possible (probable?) that test scores are higher from the OOS group.
The mid 50% range for admitted students is 31-34. That means 25% of admitted students had ACT scores under 31. Students with 29-30 on the ACT should not be discouraged from applying, especially if their transcripts are strong (challenging courses and 3.8+ unewighed GPA.
You should definitely apply. Be careful seeking this type of advice on this website. Most of the feedback is people just guessing. My daughter was accepted LSA, OOS, never visited, applied RD not EA with a 31 ACT and a weighted 3.73 gpa. Someone must have liked what they saw in her application. She will not be attending, but was honored to be considered and accepted.
