Is a car a hassle at UCLA?

Should freshmen bring a car, or is it better to walk, use a bike, or ride the bus?

Bring a car if you can get parking, it's the way to go.

In all honesty, i really don't think you'll need it if you live on campus.

I had a car for the last month spring quarter last year, and I very very rarely drove it. So from personal experience, it's definitely not worth it to buy a parking permit. (Although I didn't pay for mine, and that's why I had my car here)

Unless you really need it for a job (in which case, they'll give you a parking permit) or if you really enjoy driving in LA traffic, or if you really like going out of Westwood (going to Hollywood and all). I don't think there's any reason that you would need a car.

All your friends will be on campus. You can walk to school. There are plenty of things to do in Westwood (which is in walking distance), as a freshman.

going to class: walk
going to westwood: walk, bike, skateboard, scooter, unicycle, segway ;)
going to santa monica/hollywood/downtown LA/venice beach: bus
going to san diego, santa barbara: amtrak
going to disneyland: older friend's car

that about sums it up...

also, there's flexcar as an alternative to having your own car on campus. it basically lets you rent a car for those few times you need it (but honestly, other modes of transport will get you around).
