Is a Double major in theatre and music a bad idea?

I have been considering doing a double major in theater and music. However, looking at the requirements, it seems like I’ll be in school forever . The problem is I love both and cant pick one or the other. Anybody have any tips or feedback?

Can you minor in one of them?

OK - parent in me coming out… neither is likely to lend itself to stable employment. How about a Biz minor instead. You will certainly use what you learn.

A minor in the other discipline is certainly worth exploring.

I guess it depends what you want to do…

If you had to choose just one, which would you choose? What do you get from the other one that you’d really miss - are there other ways to gain that experience (job, internship, etc).

Rather than minoring in one, you can always self-study one. Maybe take a look at what jobs each one offers and see which you would like more.

The arts are one area where, for the most part, no one really cares if you have a degree. I’d say to major in something that you can tolerate and will make you money, while pursuing theater and music at the same time.

I suggest posting on the Musical Theatre Major, Theatre Major, and Music Major forums.

Have you considered a major in Musical Theatre?

Where I teach a double major in Theatre and Music would take a very long time to complete. There are Theatre majors who minor in Music and Music majors who minor in Theatre. I am sure this is possible at other schools as well.

Are you looking at staying in CA for college? Is your family supportive of you pursuing a major in the arts?

Arts major alums are employable in other fields, can go to medical school, law school, business school post undergrad, and can successfully secure employment in other fields if they make the decision to make a switch.

Training and education is important to becoming a well rounded artist. It does not have to be in a college setting, so it certainly is possible to major in something else and supplement your arts training and education. Particularly if you live in a location that has strong training and performance opportunities outside of a college environment.

You should be able to find lots of helpful information on the major specific forums.

Good luck!

I would recommend picking one and minoring in the other. Also you should look into minoring in education. Finding a job in Music Composition is difficult and degree isn’t even needed for performance but the world could always use more educators. Teaching would be a great fallback plan!
