Is a Film/Media major the right choice?

Hi all, i’m a returning adult studemt (28), i just finished my associates degree and am looking to transfer but having trouble declaring/deciding upon a major. My dream job is working with a media/TV company in their production department in some form…i’ve viewed jobs on this companies website and some in my area of interest say “Bachelors degree in Communications, Film, Journalism or related major preferred” so I figured majoring in media/film would be a no brainer, however i’ve realized getting on with the specific company ive dreamed of may be a long shot as well as read a lot of negative stuff about mass comm/film production degrees

so i’m kind of wondering should I major in something else (i’ve considered English or History, as teaching would be a good fallback plan (as its another career ive been interested in) and try to minor in the film/media area? or should I just go all in and major in it? The reason I didn’t mention double major, is ill be working full time while in university to pay for it, so a double major would probably be impossible for me realistically.

I’m also planning to speak with an adviser for the university ive applied/been accepted to but I want as much input/advice as I can get

Thanks!

I would major in communications vs film. Its more marketable. However, If you want to teach, communications is a bad major. What is it that you want to do at a media company? Editing? Writing copy? You should get a job, if you can, at a television or radio station so you can get a better idea of the career path you are looking for.

I had considered majoring in English (as I’d want to teach either English or Social Studies) and minoring in Radio (the university I was looking at has a radio minor) since the area i’d like to focus on is broadcasting/announcing. My reason for not Majoring in Media Studies and Minoring in the other subject, is the major is necessary to get the teaching credential at least thats how i understood it/it makes sense.
