I was wondering if a masters in a business oriented discipline would improve my chances of working in the Management consulting industry.

Management Consulting is a field that greatly interests me, but this career path is drastically different from what I thought I wanted to do. I realize now that I have put myself behind the eight ball going forward.

I attended a state school in Maryland and graduated with a 3.9 GPA in Economics and a minor in business administration. I was a recruited college athlete and played golf professionally for 6 months after graduating. I really want a more intellectually stimulating career and I am not afraid to work for it.

I realize that top Management consulting firms only pick from their target schools, none of which I attended. Is it worth considering an MS from a "brand name school" to make myself more appealing? Or would it be better for me to start working in some facet of consulting and attempt to get into better firms after an MBA down the road?

I have taken the GMAT and scored less than I anticipated but still generally acceptable 700 (Q47,Q40, IR 7); I would be willing to take it again for a higher quantitative score. I realize that most acceptances are closing soon, and am also considering taking a year to do internships/ go to asia to learn Chinese and get some global experience. I think this could be useful to applying to MS programs or low level consulting positions?

Any help or information I can get is greatly appreciated!
