Im a junior and I took the april ACT and i think i did pretty well on it. I wanted to know if you guys think that it would be good enough for Rice university which is my first choice (prob ED) and schools like emory, northwestern, bowdoin, and cornell

I just dont know if colleges look at the subscores because my composite of a 32 is in a good range for these school buts some subscores arent.

Composite 32:
Math: 30
English: 31
Science: 32
Reading :36
Essay: 8 :/ is that bad?

Thanks for the help :)

I can see that the ACT is doing an excellent job of preparing you, Sportsfreak33, to write comprehensible and coherent sentences. Unfortunately, This forum is a plethora of amaranthine posts from individuals seeking affirmation of whether or not their ACT score in the 99th percentile is sufficient enough. Tell me, if you scored so high, why can’t you do your own research? A simple google search yields the average standardized test scores accepted by Rice University. Then again, all you’re trained to do is shade in ovals and read useless graphs. Great critical thinking required in those subjects. . .

One of the best sources for ACT/SAT scores at schools is to go to collegeboard, type in the college name, then click on SAT/AP, etc. They list ACT scores there too. When I do this for Rice, I find that a 32 is right in the middle of their 50% (30-34). If it were me or my kids, I’d advise taking the test again and working with a prep book to try to increase math/English. Colleges tend to like the math/English scores better than reading/science if they look at subscores.

At the very least, you have your 32 to fall back on. However, there’s easily room to improve.

Then, don’t forget admissions is not 100% ACT/SAT scores. There’s GPA, extra curricular activities, personality, and other factors. Don’t let those like actbrah get you down. If a college gets wind of their personality they won’t get in to many places.

No, you’re fine. The writing score doesn’t count that much.

Your score is pretty good. Did you take any SAT II’s yet? My guidance counselor always tell us to take 2-3 since some schools require them.

Echoing Creekland, ACT is just one piece. If you have excellent GPA and high rank in class, this is acceptable but if you have some gaps in those, you may want to get it to 34. Since Rice will accept only ACT in lieu of SAT + 2 SAT IIs, they are giving a lot of weight to an ACT score and so you want to have the best possible, if you think you can do better. ED will definitely help.
