I'm deciding whether I should major in accounting or not. I've spent a year taking science classes and realized science is probably not my strength.

Is accounting a good fit for me? I know nothing of the business world or any kind of money-related knowledge yet. But I am very hardworking and have very good work ethics. I always study and tend to pay attention to detail. I like doing jobs where it's more objective rather than subjective. I like working with numbers and crunching numbers because it's pretty straightforward.

I feel like being an accountant could be an appropriate fit for me but I'm not sure if I'd be able to succeed at it because I have no prior knowledge of the business and financial field. I hear it's a VERY difficult process to become an accountant, especially when taking the CPA exam.

There is no way to know if accounting is right for you until you take an accounting class. It is one of those things that you either like or you don’t… and once you have taken a semester or two, you will have a good feel for whether you want to go on and make a career of it. The CPA exam is tough, but if you have done well in your classes and study for it, you certainly should pass it. You do sound like you have qualities that might make accounting a good fit for you.

I can’t tell from this if you are in college yet or not. If you are not, and you are not sure what you want to major in yet in college, try to pick a few majors that you think interest you before you get there. Make sure the college you attends offers those majors (accounting would be an example of a major that is not offered at every college). Then plan your schedule when you get to college to take a couple of classes in each of those areas over your first 3 semesters. Spend some time in your college’s career office as well during that period to get a feeling for what jobs you could get with those majors as well. Then you will be well positioned to pick a major at that time.

Yeah I’m in college now, I’m a sophomore right now.

The college I go to right now offers an accounting major, but I checked the AACSB website to check if the school was accredited but it wasn’t on the list. I don’t know if my school is accredited now.

Do I need to get the accounting degree from an accredited school in order to take the CPA exam?

Your school does not need to be accredited by AACSB for you to be able to sit for the CPA exam. However, do note, that if you transfer or take graduate studies at a AACSB school, it will look better on your resume.

To be truthful, I enjoy math and number crunching as well, but Intro to Financial Accounting was probably the most bland, boring, and downright dull class that I’ve had to take as a business major.

Take the intro class, can’t hurt, see what it’s about and see how you feel. Because that class taught me that I never want to be anything close to an accountant.
