Is anyone attending the Accepted Students Invitation to Visit UP?

Is it worth it for me to drive 4 hours to and back from Penn State University Park for a 5 hour day spent there in order to explore Penn State. By the way I've never been to Pennslyvania so I've never seen the campus. I thought this will be an awesome opportunity for me to get a feel for the college which can help make my final decision. But my father seems to disagree. He feels it is unnecessary to travel so far for a 5 hour period at Penn State. So is it worth it for me to attend?

Definitely! You want to see it before you make the decision.

Dreamer - can you really make a decision on where you go to college without first seeing where you will be for the next four years? My daughter is a sophomore and I have a daughter who will be starting this summer - they both LOVE State College. It is absolutely in the middle of nowhere - it’s almost four hours from us and there is nothing in between. BUT…once you get there - it is awesome! Someone else mentioned - it’s not called Happy Valley for no reason. But I urge you to visit before you make a decision to say yes or no. And it is rainy, snowy, cold in the winter - but the spring and fall are just beautiful.

We live in PA 3hrs away and have been to PSU a few times, but we still took my S for admitted students day and it was really worth it. He saw a whole different side of the school that day. We stayed overnight and walked around the campus the night before. He also arranged time with a professor after the very busy day and that worked out well too. Drive the 5 hours, but try to make the most of it while you are there. You won’t be sorry!

Kblitz: I guess that makes sense. I, personally, wanted to visit it too. Now I just have to convince my dad it’s a good idea.

Lovegoldens123: Madame, thank you for sharing your daughters experiance. And your absolutely correct. I should visit it before making any final decision, it is infact Going to be my home for the most important and ambitious years of my life.

Bandgy: Thank you for your opinion. It sounds like it will be very beneficial for me to attend. I will try to follow your advice and make the most out of it. I didn’t know you can stay overnight? I mean did you stay on campus, with a relative or at an inn(hotel).

Dreamer - we took our D to all five of the colleges she applied to at least once for the information session and tours. When she decided on Penn State we attended the accepted student day and found it very beneficial. We are only about 2 1/2 hours from State College, but still stayed overnight and enjoyed a great weekend! THON was going on and we had a great time there as well. We were expecting to hear much of the same from our prior tour, but because it was an accepted student day they really spent more time talking about what to expect the first year, in your field of study, and then had separate break out groups for parents and students which were very helpful. I think it would be time well spent seeing the campus and hearing more about what they have to offer especially if you’ve never been there. Spend the night and see downtown, walk around and get a feel for the campus. Good Luck !!!

I definitely recommend staying overnight. It’ll make you less tired and you’ll be able to see Penn State after dark and try one of the downtown’s restaurants for dinner. A lot of the surrounding hotels are pretty cheap.

Thanks for the Insight PUPSMOM !

Kpattz: thanks for the input ! After all these respones i’ve decided to attend.
