Well, i recieved my AP physics grade of an "F" today, and i wasn't much surprised. I told my counselor that for this term (well sessioen) of school, I would not be able to study or do any work for any type of AP class. (I had family issues and no time since i'm drum major and in 5 different bands/orchestras for school [section leader for all], also National Honor Society secrartary stuff got in the way [damn paperwork lol]). Anyway I was forced to take it this term when i knew i would fail due to time constraints. I still have another session to go (i'm on a block schedule). However, does this ultimately destroy my dreams of MIT? I knew this would happen, but my counselor isn't a very understanding person. I have about a 4.0 GPA and ranked kind of high (34 out of 618). I'm more into the commuity than into studying for tests. But, i do well in science olympiad and academic deacatholon events. I just still don't know. Is that MIT material or not? As for sports, I do fencing, and recieved honors from my engineering academy at school. I still need to take the SAT's and all that other jazz, but if i do well in those, do i still have a slim slim chance at least. sigh

How have your past science and math scores been? If they've generally been As, I'm sure you have a chance if you send a letter to MIT explaining your predicament.

Hope your family issues get better and good luck!

There's always a section on the application that says, "Tell us anything else you think we should know," which would be the perfect place for you to explain how family problems etc got in the way of your schoolwork. They get that kind of thing all the time and won't penalize you for it. As for the question of whether you get in or not, all you can do is try your best and do the things you love. (Which should be rewarding enough itself!)

i dont think your GPA is a 4.0

he said 'about' a 4.0

but, neuvieme, if you want to be able to handle MIT coursework neuvieme, you probably should be able to at least pass your AP physics class without exerting very much effort at all, IMHO

The family issues are legitimate reasons. Being in the band is not an excuse for getting an F. You should have gotten your priorities straight. Think about what the reality of the situation is. You failed a high school class but are asking about getting into arguably the best technical school in the world. I doubt it's going to happen. I'm not trying to be a dick, but I think that is the reality of the situation.

I knew band wasn't excuse for an "F". As for my other AP math/science grades and all other AP/Honors classes, they are all A. It's just my physics is during 4th and because of band/family (for this session) i miss my 4th period constantly, and i don't have lunch (it's before 4th).. so yeah i've missed 5 tests, and we had only five tests. (I got the content down) The family part plays into again because as a result of it i had no chance to make up the tests the 3 days he said i could (they are all zero). I'm just mad because i told the counselor i would be missing 4th period and he said oh well and wouldn't let me take it at the nearby college. Also my physics teacher said he had a life and couldn't stay after school so i could make them up. So yeah, it was either take a chance at AP physics now (we don't even have regular physics 4th).... or trying getting into MIT with just having never taken it at all, but i took a chance and failed it no excuse. I just wished i failed it because i didn't get the material, not because i wasn't in the class when i told everyone i couldn't be there. Either way i still know i'm responsible.... it feels good to vent though...

why didn't you drop it? who needs AP physics? I didn't take any proper AP physics. can you drop it now? knock it from your transcript? I think if you want a chance of getting in you'll want to explain in detail your situation.

Yeah, you should definitely explain that on your app. If you write something similar to what you just said, I think the admissions officers will probably look past the F.

Turns out i got a "C" they mixed up my student ID with another person. It was odd, I was looking at my transcript and it said male (i'm female). I was like "What?". However, now (since i was absent for 2 weeks in first period, and we have block scheduling) i now have a D+ (69.8%) in Trig, that i didn't know i had (so i haven't been tring to bring it up).

I'm not giving up, but too much going on with family... perhapes i'll try for MIT when I do my graduate work. I only want to be accepted and go, if i can put my heart and attention into the work i do...

thanks for the advice everyone...
