Next year I will be a junior, and most kids either take an English elective or AP Lang. I've been a literature nut for years (it's actually my focus for quiz bowl), and would like to take AP Lit instead. This would require permission from the teacher, which I'm sure I can get, but I'm just wondering whether it would be better to wait and take lang first. Is it hugely beneficial? Does it help you in later English courses?

AP Language may not be essential for AP Literature, but I’d argue that it’s definitely worth it in the long run. I took it as a sophomore and it taught me, more than anything, how to effectively put together arguments. It’s a lot more applicable to the real world, at least the way it was taught to me, and it forces you to think about current events just as much as novels or plays.

There is a lot of writing involved in the course, but there’s a lot of writing in Literature, as well, so it really depends on what you enjoy more - Language is a lot more based on persuasion, while Literature is a lot more analysis, though skills in both are required for either course.

Well, my plan is to take AP Lit next year, then do independent study in English my senior year to focus on certain types of literature/works from certain time periods. So I’d like to avoid lang if possible…
