I am interested in MITES, but I am not a minority. However, I am very low in economic status (way less than 60,000 a year), so do I have a reasonable chance? I know asians have made it, but never heard of whites. Also, my mom was adopted so I could potentially be a minority, but I really doubt it. I think that it self should be a minority. I am half mystery.

“I am half mystery.”

That’s beautiful.
Personally I’m not fond the the entire construct of race and all so If admissions is that deeply affected by it I’m not too glad but I’m afraid I don’t know enough about it to say. I’ve heard of MITES and that’s it’s really and excellent program, but they do have “minority” in the title. Not sure.

But as for your comment that you’re “half mystery”, that’s absolutely brilliant. Please run with that. I’m not sure it’ll at all help you as far as the race thing with MITES is concerned but I’m sure if you can make it show up in college essays (though whether you want to choose your mom’s adoptive origins as a focus of an essay is up to you, it may not be too helpful or allow much room for creativity), it would be awesome.

Just thought I’d throw that out there.

Sigh

So the verdict is that it is only for racial minorities? I had wanted to apply as a white female

There are white people who get in. In my year, there was one, and he was an Eastern European immigrant with his own inspirational story. So it really just depends.

Haha, I am definitely going for it then moodragonx. I like the program a lot, and what they do for those who are underrepresented. Haha, I just hope they will consider socioeconomic class and ethnic obscurity enough.

I don’t think it is only for minorities, but it is definitely designed for minorities. I am planning on applying though questbridge senior year, which somewhat lumps ethnicity and financial income together, hoping MITES might feel the same. I really want to know what it is like at MIT, and there is no way I could ever visit. You should definitely apply so I don’t feel alone.
