Is APUSH worth it?

I am a sophomore and cannot decide whether or not to take AP US History next year. I will already be taking AP Calc, AP Lang, and APES. Along with my orchestra and Spanish, it only leaves room for one more class. I'd like to take the international business and finance class offered at my school since that is the field that I'm planning on entering in college, but would taking an AP class be more useful? Another option would be for me to take Spanish online so I can fit in APUSH, but I'm still debating whether it is worth it or not. Would AP Stats also be a good class to take instead of APUSH?

Option 1: International business/ finance course, Spanish, online regular US history
Option 2: Online Spanish, international business, APUSH
Option 3: Online Spanish, international business, AP Stats

Thanks for the help!

APUSH is the best class I ever took.

If you want an easy class, take stat. I’m a soph also and I’m currently taking it and I love it. The content is pretty easy and it’s not “really” math, but probability is pretty fun.

I’m a senior and I made the mistake of not taking this class. In my school, Regular and AP aren’t too different, so I had learned most AP material by the end of the year. I missed out on the credits which I could have easily procured. I’m not sure if AP and regular are similar at the school you attend, but its definitely worth a shot. The fun part about it is distinguishing the blunders in American History. If you’re into that sort of stuff, I would definitely recommend it. I have to admit though, the first few semesters are boring because its pertains to early civilizations. That’s how I feel, however. The 1900’s were my favorite part of that class since we were involved in two wars. Again, you might like early civilizations, but if you don’t, this is a warning. The rest of the APUSH isn’t too bad.

I think you should take APUSH and maybe try self studying for the AP stats exam if you want to. I hear that stats is one of the easier APs to study for, but it’s harder to take APUSH without a class.

If you do take APUSH, it’s a SERIOUS time commitment. The way my class worked last year, I didn’t end up liking the class probably because it wasn’t geared towards the way I think. It is VERY MUCH a memorization-based course where the sheer volume of information and ability to regurgitate it with a few connecting sentences are the main problems. I didn’t like it because of my teacher’s grading system. It was easy to get a B the way he scaled everything, but getting an A was essentially impossible. If you’re the kind of person that can do the “flashcard” studying, know it well, and be able to spit it back out on a piece of paper, then you’ll do well, but it was really not that much fun for me, even though my teacher was awesome and clearly knew what he was talking about.

YES. It is absolutely my favorite class. Your analysis and writing skills get so much better, and you learn an absolute ton.

Content-wise, I’d definitely say that APUSH is worth it. I never had a remote interest in United States history, but it’s still one of the best classes that I ever took. However, it will take a lot of time and hard work to score a 5 or, depending on your class, to get an A. Really, it’s up to you and how much you’re willing to study.

If you’re a history nerd like me, APUSH will be the best class ever for you. No lie, I would take that class again if I could. It was incredibly interesting.

I am not much of a history person but I think APUSH has a lot of worth in preparing students as informed citizens. The information is actually really applicable to everyday life and it’s fun to be able to name amendments on the spot and put presidents, events, famous people into their historical context.

It really depends on your school. I’m not a history person at all, but my teacher was awesome and I learned a lot in that class. In general, the stuff you learn in APUSH is actually really applicable in life like Amaranthine said.

my least fave class, personally… but hey, if u like history

Depends how easy APUSH is at your school.

I would do some investigating on who teaches it. At my school, you basically had to memorize the textbook to do well in the class, and during class we never got through much material. If the teacher at your school teaches like that, then you might as well take it online. However, if you know that the teacher is good and will not just hand you the textbook to learn for yourself, it might be worthwhile.

The other thing is, take what you are interested in. At least at my school, APUSH is not one of those AP classes you should take if you only want to take it because it is an AP class. You have to enjoy history at least a little and be willing to put in a lot of time.

I’m just not sure if I’m willing to commit a lot of time to a history class when I could be taking another math or science. The people at my school are split, many love the class while many hate it. I have heard that there is a lot of homework and like I said, I’m unsure if I should be focusing on history that much when I could be focusing on another subject.

Also, AP Gov is required senior year. If I don’t take APUSH, will taking AP Gov be more of a challenge?

No I think that gov was easier than APUSH. By a lot. I did not have nearly as much homework and there was a lot less to memorize. It is one of those classes where you either get it (and do very well), or you don’t. Most people get it. Also, we had a lot of debates where participation was included in your grade. So as long as you contributed to the discussion x number of times, you got full participation points, which was nice.
