Is ASU safe?

Hi I am a senior in high schoolwho is a resident of California and was wondering if Arizona State University would be a good fit. I am pretty liberal and I know Arizona is much more conservative than California. I am very respectful of others opinions and I just want mine to be respected as well. I am planning on attending the tempe campus and would like to join a fraternity. Any thoughts? Or should I look elsewhere?

“Safe” in what respect?

Generally, participating in fraternities increases your risk, due to increased alcohol drinking and associated increased risks (of accidents or crimes) that occur while under the influence, as well as the possibility of some chapters engaging in (prohibited) dangerous hazing.

Phoenix metro is somewhat left leaning compared to the state as a whole, and college student age people tend to lean somewhat left compared to the general adult population.

You asked if the campus is safe. Google ASU Clery Report. That will give you stats on crime on campus as well as crimes against students.

@SDSUHopefulClassof2025 - I am going on 7 years with a student at ASU. If you are concerned about liberal vs conservative, don’t be. ASU, like many colleges, is generally more liberal than the surrounding community. Do you think you will be threatened by some MAGA wearing redneck? Time to step out of the bubble and live with the rest of us. Also, there are a large number of Southern CA students at ASU that opted for a 4 year degree in 4 years as opposed to a 5 or 6 year program (SDSU and UCLA have that reputation).

ASU is a ‘dry’ campus. That said, parties happen and fraternities are very active in that scene. Where you might run into more issues is with marijuana. Its legal here in CA, but not in AZ.

ASU is a large campus, so I am sure you can find a group that will make you feel right at home. My sons have never felt unsafe on campus.

Thank you!

Thank you!

Also, I think safe was the wrong word, I think I meant more open and welcoming to all different people, as I do want to be in a fraternity and a lot of the fraternity pages say that but specific chapters can be different.

And, @usma87 I totally understand about what you are saying about living in a bubble, I think what I meant was if there would be an even amount of people with different backgrounds and ideologies.

@SDSUHopefulClassof2025 - I think you will find a wide range of thoughts and perspectives.
