Although California has the largest population in the country, is it really that competitive when it comes to service academies (Nominations, appointments, etc.)?
I’m wondering because I rarely see anyone on forums mention receiving appointments from there.

YES...YES and YES! Just b/c you don't see alot around here doesn't mean it isn't comp. Not many people know about this site, it is only those that search it out that will find it. Cali is one of the most comp. along with NY, VA, CO, TX and FL. The more military bases in the area the more people gravitate to it.

Pos. side Cali has great schools for academics like VA which helps in he WCS for the Academics portion.

half of the wing is from california. and half are from texas.. end of story

Uh...nice try but...NO.

Yes, CA is competitive; very. BUT...so are a lot of other places.

Example: in AZ we routinely place 40 - 50 folks per year in a class of 1300 - 1400 at USAFA alone. And we have a small population base compared to TX, CA, etc...etc...

Quality will ALWAYS trump quantity.

When it comes to service academies, dont always assume that the population will make it the most competitive. As the above poster just touted Arizona as being top notch with its amount of appointees each year, pay closer attention to where Air Force bases are located in which states...

I am from PA and although population wise we are a very competitive state, we have NO Air Force installations short on the Air National Guard up in Pittsburgh... The same holds true for the extremely populous state of New York. Compare that to 2 major bases in AZ and although many cadets dont come from military families let alone Air Force families I have found that the majority of them do... ;)

ah, af16, my very good friend...

lol, let's not let this be a competition about whose state is most competitive.

i'd say it depends on where you're from in ca. if you're from the bay area, i'd venture to say it's not as competive as, say, los angeles or san diego. :D
but yes, it's pretty competitive.

i might've asked you before, but where are you from? i'm from alpine and another kid in my squad is from poway and another from la mesa (all the same congressman, lol)

I live in Mira Mesa/Miramar, next to the MCAS base (former "Top Gun").

yea well you better get up for second semester and my moving even closer to ya down the hall... ;)

and I have a valid point if you would hear me out geez... I was stating that PA isnt near as competitive than say AZ or VA despite having a much larger population so no competition...

besides you hail from CA, enough said... :)

What about Las Vegas, Nevada??? Nellis AFB is 30 mins from the city so does that make the demand higher???

potter and her dad are from las vegas...i'm sure they can answer :)
