Is CompSci redundant with InfoSci?

Just speaking about my current academic situation, I am currently an undergraduate student who recently switched from Chemical Engineering to Information Science at Penn State - University Park. Trying to get into a PhD Computer Science program, I am wondering if it would be worth the effort and time getting an additional degree in Computer Science, or would this be redundant? Currently, I am going to schedule an Oracle Java certification exam as well as a certificate course in Web Development early 2013. If I just stay with Information Science I will finish by the end of Summer 2014, but if I add Computer Science to that I will be finished by the end of Spring 2015.

If you’re planning on getting a PhD in CS, then I would recommend majoring in CS. IS is not focused enough in CS to be especially helpful in your post-grad studies.

Why do you want a PhD in CS? Your certifications (Java, Web Development) seem to point to an industry (non-theoretical-research) career.

That being said, CS would be preferable.
